Title: Knocking in and opening up
Post by: morgzy10 on May 01, 2013, 02:53:45 PM
My new ricochet still feels a little under prepared and quite hard pressed, have knocked in for about 4-5 hours but doesnt go anywhere unless hit dead in the middle.
Anybody have any tips for quicker knocking in?
or even a way to make the bat open up quicker?

Invest in a heavy mallet , Knocks it in much quicker. Use it as much as you can . My GM was a total dud to start with but after 5 six sessions of nets plus knocking in has made it nice. You also get better feel for your bat if you stick with it everytime.

does your club have a colts side?  if so, get the under 15s to use it for a game or two...

It does but I wouldn't trust kids with a £300 blade!  And I may have to take your advice on the heavy mallet. As my one is a combi gripper and mallet and I don't seem to be getting anywhere :(

Are you using a flat or rounded mallet???

This link has a flat on one side and round on the other. Round works best but be careful as you can easily crack the bat if hitting to hard at the start. Flat ones are a waste of time but required to even out the dents/craters after the round head session

My Woodstock was like that, smashed it with the mallet, no marks. Used in the nets, covered in seam marks  ???

Download an audio book and grab beers ... go to a park far away from people, listen to the book, drink beer and mallet away until the book or beers are finished.

Repeat a couple of days and you are good to go :)

I intend to walk to work ( half hr)  tomorrow while knocking in then do half hr at lunch then again on way home.. repeat on Friday and that's three hours before the weekend and ready to go!

One tip is to put a couple of cut down grips on the handle. Makes it comfortable and means you can hit harder and longer!!

I rest the back of the bat on a towel over our cloth washing basket and bash to kingdom come.  Just need to hold the handle for support then!

Round head. But it's not leaving dents
Try glancing blows on the face, instead of hitting it head on

How hard do you knock near the Toe Area?

My SG was a dud to start it but two seasons on, it is an absolute dream now.

Somehow my ricochet is now going like an absolute train and I'm not sure it's even opened up fully.   Msr is going the same way too
