I was no balled yesterday in a game for having 6 fielders on the leg side (an unusual field i admit, but I bowl offies and the guys was a number 11 just looking to shovel everything through the legside, is this correct or was i done by an overly keen umpire.
The MCC laws make no mention of it, but the ICC ODI rules do say that is the case.

The question would be what rules are you playing to? If, before the match, this wasn't made clear then I don't believe you should have been no balled. You Weren't playing an odi...

your league should have playing conditions specified. in that they might follow a set of rules (it could be the ICC ODI ones). do check up on that.

No, even I know that rule.
Our rules say
Which translates to
Cricket matches arranged by The Norwegian Cricket Board (NCF) will be completed according to the current international cricket laws, and NCF player rules. These will be referred to as 'the laws' or 'international cricket laws' in this document, but this means the current MCC laws.
I make this to mean we play to the MCC laws, which doesn't have this rule, but the phrase about ' international cricket laws muddies the water a little.

I have seen this done by a league umpire before and baffled me as I'd never heard the rule before so we asked him after (we were batting) and he said was a standard rule but I've never been able to find out through league and most would not know it I'd bet

Think depends on the rules of the competition as saw this when I was looking through rules of the Bucks Challenge Cup we were playing in
-
This is the case in our league. No more than 5 allowed on the leg side!
-
Eddie Hemmings would have a fit!
-
There are a few who would. I've seen it done in the National Knockout before, never in league cricket.
-
I found no mention of it in the fielding restrictions section of our league rules, only the Powerplay restrictions.
-
we had an 8-1 off side field for one bowler Saturday, I suppose they'll ban that as well!

was there a bodyline era rule at some point?

Yes, the one about only having 2 behind square on the legside.
