Title: Taking the ball?
Post by: siridurrani on May 07, 2013, 05:23:31 PM
I have a slight issue when it comes to taking the ball, I'm a late comer to wicket keeping, being a semi pro football keeper, I was thrust into it a few years ago, and have taken to it very well, however I have a tendency for the ball to thud into my hands, even when I go with the ball. It is a weird one as when I stand up, it is fine, I can take most balls without it hurting the hand at all, however standing back the ball just seems to go in that 10% harder. Not sure what the solution is, any ideas?

Thanks :)

Your possibly having to much time to think about taking the ball. As standing up you dont have to think about it. You just react as your time is limited, whereas standing back, you have a couple of seconds to decide on how to take the ball, maybe you are trying to take the ball technically different than you do when up to the stumps...

Hope that helps :) :)

Thanks for the reply, that could be true, I think as you said standing up is over so quickly where as standing back isn't. It is a weird one though!

Think it might just be a technical issue, bet it is something really silly, but might get someone at uni to give it a go and see what they can pick up!!

let the momentum carry your hands back a little, Maybe you are taking the ball later than you think.

Siri,

Could be when standing back that you are not giving with the gloves, let the ball come to you and as it goes into the gloves give a little. Try to have soft hands. Okay sometime the ball moves after it passes the bat. Even Prior has problems with seam wobble on the ball.

Check out Jack Russells masterclass on you tube it might help.

What gloves are you using?

I use the 2012 salix pod keeping stuff, hmmm, I do concentrate on giving with the gloves but the ball just seems to thud in, I'm adept at having soft hands all the time being a football keeper, but a lot of the time in just wangs in, and you end up getting some horrible bruises!

Just had a thought, are you taking the ball in front of your body with the hands pointing downwards (the old way) or fingers pointing towards the stumps or the aussie way, inside or outside the body.

I'm old and was bought up on a diet of Alan Knott and Bob Taylor who took the ball in front of the body just below the waist. (okay you have to make allowances for bounce etc)

Also every opportunity you get watch James Foster, now there's a quality keeper, oh and forum legend Simmy, checkout his oven glove challenge on you tube. :)

Simmy is a man who knows his onions when it comes to glovework

I take it the Aussie way, or try to anyways haha, another factor is that i'm around 6ft5 and a bit so I'm usually taking the ball pretty lowish, i'll have a think about it though!

I know this is not going to help and I'm sorry for that.

But when reading the topic I instantly thought of you being that kid who takes the football home with them when they don't get their own way.

As you where chaps.

as a part time keeper .. i find when you say the ball thuds into the gloves is a good way of putting it . id say 4 off 6 balls go in nicely the other 2 have a bit of a sting to them. if i was you try training and remember where abouts you catch the ball when it doesnt hurt to where it does hurt. as i have to catch it a different way to when im fielding. i find with keeping it looks easy and effortless from the sidelines . but its a lot harder when your doing it !

as a goal keeper and a wicket keeper i am just gifted with the amazing talent of being able to catch :)

i think i take the ball with my fingers pointing down to the ground and a cushion the ball into the gloves i think

Maybe try thinking about your arms being 'soft' and giving with the ball with your hands being strong but not hard. Could be a different way of thinking. Hope that made sense!
