Title: Those bats that you can't say goodbye to
Post by: Twelfth Man on May 16, 2013, 01:12:34 PM
Came across this whilst looking through Cricinfo and it got me wondering about people on here. Has anybody/does anybody do something similar to this with a dearly loved bat that they do not wish to part with?

Still have my first ever bat, about 8 years old now, scored first ton with it, still in god nick though as I've looked after it pretty well, but its hardly recognisable anymore due to the amount of tape and changes made to the stickers

The one I'm using now! When I got it it was in need of a decent refurbishment and had been used quite a lot. I'm onto my 3rd season with it. It's a Talisman Perfect Storm and a beauty. Gets a good refurb every year and it seems to be going strong. Covered in lashings of glue, tape and good luck!

Chanderpaul had been using the same bat for ages, think he's finally changed it but I remember seeing it on Sky the other day.

still got my first Red Inker. it was the first bat i ever made. scored my first 2 league hundreds with it and its scored over 3500 runs plus nets and indoor games. still going strong after 2 years. very little to no damage to it at all. decided to retire it as a keep sake rather than see it die.

Strangely my one is a TLB haha. Got it at the end of the 2011 season and was one of those that just feels perfect in hand. Was a sad day when it finally broke before the start of this season, massive crack from the toe half way up the bat :(

My last Warsop was really hard to let go.

It had 3 or 4 refurbs and re-stickers and the middle got smaller and smaller. Eventually I recycled it, just a few months back. I must of kept it for 4 years after I sopped using it.
Normally I give my bats away when I'm done.

My Screaming Cat, whilst it has broken toe but I must say I'm very tempted to fix it myself and start using it. But will hold on to it.

Samit does that to all his bats for some reason, can't really see which one that is but my guess is that it's not that old

Its to hide the secret compartments where he stashes snakcs for his time in the middle... ;)

Why does he really do it though? Is it that the bats actually in fact need it or as I'm pretty sure I've seen this before just a crazy superstition haha. I do like Manormanic's theory though! ;)

He was using that before he signed with Spartan, that big area of damage in the middle has slowly become more pronounced over the last 18 months or so

Test match players bat lasting 18 months?  Is this common?  i thought they would go fairly quickly due to the amount of nets, and games

Probably would have just saved that special one for games and then have used his others for netting etc. I know that if I had a special one I would do everythimg I could to keep it for games!

Knocking, caring for it, oiling it, stickering and refurbishing it. Hmm I guess people take care of them as their GFs. So as old as it goes, no other option other than sticking to it if u are comfortable with it.

Made me a few quid on backing him in play for his run total - almost even money every time for him scoring another 9 runs. Can't argue with that.

I keep meaning to mention Shiv's bat on here! It is a little bit ridiculous. I wonder how many innings/runs that bat has been through? By the looks of it, it must be a personal favourite. Seems to still have a pinging middle so why not...

Here is a couple of pictures of my Kookaburra Recoil that has definitely seen better days. Crack going from the toe up the right handers inside edge one way and slowly up the face the other! Refusing to say goodbye, even if I'm not currently using it. Maybe it's time to retire the ol' girl.

glad this  thread as been bumped again

mines my bb that i bought from soulman for just 95 quid. first time i used it i got my first senior 50 (i still play under 15's) then a few weeks later i scored exactly 100* for my seconds with it, will probably get it framed or something after i retire it.

Ah, I've got'cha! I've actually decided to give my trusty Kookaburra Recoil a little sand down to try and give it a new life. Needs a nice oil, something for the toe, a scuff sheet and a little grip to finish off things. I JUST CAN'T SAY GOODBYE!
