Walked out to the crease at the weekend, ticking along nicely until this happened (photos below). My trusty 2011 Quantum gave way with a stomach churning crack. I could hear the slips sobbing with me as i trudged off, victim in hand. :( Very much doubt it's repairable, if anyone could give an educated opinion i'd be hugely grateful. Popped in to see Paul at IJC yesterday, he shared my pain but his was far more short lived as I picked up another wand to replace the GN.
RIP

What new bat did you pick up mate?
-
Its dead, looks like storm damage??
-
Or a splicing issue? Right at the bottom of the splice. A mates legned dd that, and my old powerbow did it too
-
Not nice to see to a fellow gray nicolls lover. Horrible when it breaks! What bat did you decide to replace it with mate?
-
I went in fairly open minded. But came away with a Hammer Hel 156 LE. I know theres been a lot of talk about Hammer etc.. But i was hugely surprised after picking one up. It's a 2.10, nicely balanced and as good as anything else Paul had on his shelf in my opinion. Was close to taking the Willowstix Spitfire, but the middle was just a tad too high for my liking and liked the M&H Low original. But the Hel just pipped them. Really looking forward to using it this weekend.
Yeah...thought it was un-saveable. Oh well. I thought i could have been storm damage, but i've never seen a bat split like that with storm damage, only seen clean cracks running the width of the bat. A real shame, it was a beautifully balanced thing!
-
I've seen one split like that before and be repaired with glue and twine and then last for 2-3 season more, but there's also every chance it'll still just break right away.

Haha, I thought you'd be pleased Jason. I've been a long term admirer for a while. Glad I could finally see one in the flesh, and once I did, that was it. True love at first sight!

by coincidence a m and h distinction spilt exactly like this at the weekend
ive posted it back to m and h to look at
anyone know what actually causes this?
-
I might still send mine back to GN. But it's more than 12 months old, so I know I won't get a replacement. But if there are any preventative measures that anyone knows to help avoid this in the future then I'd be delighted to hear them!
-
Its usually an issue cause by poor fitting of the handle, have seen a few go that way and it will only get worse. Anything is fixable but some aren't playable like this really.
Pictures are not clear but cant see any storm damage/ stress but you never know.
-
Exactly the same thing as to what happened to mine last week, heart breaking isnt it, paid £300 for my GM Icon OLE for this to happen, hoping GM will sort me out though.
-
I've fixed bats like this and in fact much worst - but they don't last very long - if at all.
Not sure what causes it, like perkins has said could well be a handle issue - to tight im guessing

I would send that to Gray Nicolls and demand another, I can only say that in my opinion that bat has broken through no fault of yours and I would e surprised if you were not issued with a replacement.
On a separate note If your hammer is anything like mine it will be a gun mate.

Haha, I have actually! We love the same brand ;) I always have done. Had a season away from their kit but went back to it for 2013. Luckily out of all my bats nothing like this has ever happened to a GN!

Think i will do exactly that. Hopefully i get a shiny new GN would be a lovely bonus. And what Hammer did you plump for?? The response and sound are beautiful, I'm already feeling slightly sorry for the oppo this weekend...

Exactly same crack happened to my brothers GN, was gone in days .... :(
-
similar position cracks happen to my friend oblivion as well. having seen all these picture of gray nicolls bat breaking it really shocks me...
-
Thought i'd quickly give an update on this. Gray-Nicolls sent back a long winded report, basically put it down to Storm Damage. Wouldn't offer me a replacement as the bat was older then 12 months. But offered me a deal on a Players Maverick. I thought about it and decided to take them up on it, so here is the new addition to my Bat Family. Ended up costing £155, which isn't too shabby i think!!

very nice bat mate, however i would say i think Gray Nicolls were out of order selling a bat with storm damage anyway., The bat maker should have checked for the signs when making the bat and not sold it to the trade. Slix and M&H would never sell these to trade and only sell via there wedsite or factory direct and with no warrenty but at huge discount as you never know how long it will last. You have got a great bat there in the Maveick but i do not think you should have had to pay a penny.
Also a checky plug, i have a lovely Quentem in the sale section going cheap if you fancy another as your a huge GN fan ;)

Is there a way to tell if a bat is storm damaged?
A friend's brand new knocked in TT just broke at the Toe and I wandered if it's possible to tell or not.

From my knowledge storm damage and compression cracks are the same. It occurs when the tree is blown in strong wind and tends to happen to clefts from the top part of a tree trunk. You would be looking for small cracks that run across the blade on most occasions there normally not easily spot able but if you hold the bat up to good light you can make them out 9-10 times. The problem with a lot of bats is the amount of stickers on most bats you would be very hard pushed to spot it when you were buying a stickered bat from a shop. This can normally only be picked up at the early stage when the bat is still just a cleft or a handled cleft ready for shaping.

Gray Nicolls might do a repair, i dont think it would be as good as the original though, and you might have to pay the hefty shipping charges aswell! :-[

Lovely looking bat that is well bad the heartwood
-
What's up with these GNs cracking, mate's bat cracked exactly the same way as yours last week. Was fairly new as well.
-
Hmmm. I've been surprised with the amount of people that have come back with the same sorts of issues. Suffice to say that it's probably put me off GN bats. They've never been my main match bats but I think my time with them is done after the Maverick has hit the dust. Think ill have to pick up a couple of Laver's or a Screaming Cat before I go bankrupt instead!
-
That new Maverick looks nice mate, hope it serves you better than your last GN! Did you yourself put the tape around the toe?

Cheers, I hope this lasts a lot longer too!! And yeah, taped up the edges and toe after knocking them in a bit more
