Just saw a topic posted by MagicMonty about his Gray Nics and thought I'd put up my latest breakage on here to see what people think?
I am by no means an expert on bat making or breakages so have not much of an idea what the problem is here.
Should I get a replacement?
I have used this bat for no more than 5 net sessions and 3 matches and they come match ready.
Thanks

That's very broken, does the crack go through the back?
-
haha, yes I agree, very very broken!
Not sure how the hell it happened as I played a straight drive down the ground, timed quite well (if I don't say so myself) and look back at my bat and it's in this state!
It doesn't go through the back, this is as far as it goes..

Oh dear, what bat is it?
I should think it would be replaced
-
I agree that is done for and replacement worthy
-
Ah, this involves my big problem though haha..
This bat is made by V Sports and probably my 10th+ bat from them.
I break so many and take them back and last time I was there, I really did get a vibe that the bat maker is getting sick and tired of me.
I don't often go back and ask for a replacement but the last time I broke a bat, I asked him for a replacement and he sent a really inferior bat.
Therefore, I very nicely put in a word saying about this and got this bat for £100.
Not sure what to do but I had already planned to go down there on thursday before breaking this due to knowing what I am like.
Can never buy £300/£400 bats often as I break them too easy. Therefore, my Adidas Elite gets minimal use and my Kahuna Players hasn't been used yet hahaha.

Wow! I feel your pain! Never nice to see a bat in such a sorry state. My condolences!

Thanks haha! Lucky I'm used to it now..

I don't know how you can break bats so easily! I take it you are quite an aggressive player? Just make sure you're not using cheap balls in nets and knock in the bats properly, and they should last you! :) I would take up Vulcan on their offer for a match grade bat at £150 at the moment, a great offer and I would have been all over it if I didn't have so many bats already! :-[
-
I am quite an aggressive player, agreed.
But I wouldn't say I was as much as it seems.
I am an opening bat and don't seem to play over the top or anything along the big hitter lines..
I guess it's because I usually play at 4/5 times a week?
-
Do you tap your bat on the ground in your stance?
-
Yes but fairly gently because of the issues I have.
I would stop but it's become a bit of a routine that for some reason I am being superstitious about.
-
With all your bats that have broken, are they breaking in the same way?
-

Haha that's quite a lot of cricket, how long does 1 bat normally last you? (5 nets and 3 matches isn't that much though!) You should maybe ask/look for a pretty hard pressed bat, and just try last the whole season with it. It will turn into an absolute rocket if pressed played in well. :)
-
regardless of how many bats you "break" this seems like either a fault in the wood or due to handle splicing etc to me. I am not an expert, but this is defo worth a replacement and chat. If the bat maker is replacing them with inferior bats then its more a cost to them as they have to keep replacing.
-

This is the first time I have ever seen a bat break like this, let alone my own.
I have had 2 or 3 break similar to the way MagicMonty's Gray Nics has broke.

Sounds like a good idea actually.
I normally always go to V Sports as he knows exactly what I like.
He normally gets a long bladed bat with a low middle and chops it down at the bottom to a normal size so the middle is extremely low.
But I suppose most bat makers on here can do that..
-
I note in your original post that you mention that the bats come 'match ready'. Does this mean your just going straight out and using them? If so then this might be your problem! You always have to knock your bat in before you use it. How much depends on the bat itself but I would never take a brand new bat into a net if I hadn't given it at least 40 mins to an hour of knocking in!

Yeah, V Sports are good batmakers though from what I've heard! How much are these setting you back?

Tushar Sehgal, take a bow.
Couldn't of said it any better.
Was exactly what I was thinking. Just gonna have to go down to the workshop, despite knowing I may not be the bat maker's best mate, and explain that this couldn't have been my fault this time round. I doubt I am that bad of a customer as I normally buy a new one at full price again.

I kind of agree with this, I am lazy and don't normally give a knock with a mallet. He knocks them in fully by hand and then I usually have some throw downs with old balls before going and using it. Suppose, being an opening bat, it's not great to go and hit new balls early on.
Yeah, V Sports are good batmakers though from what I've heard! How much are these setting you back?
This one, £100, but normally between £120 and £150.
-
It's either not knocked in properly or driftwood. Why would you keep going back to someone who sells you inferior bats?
-
In that case, I would question the amount of knocking in the bat has had before being given to you. If you're going to go back to V sports to get a replacement then ask them not to knock it in for you and send it off to IJC or one of the many places that will knock a bat in for you and get them to do it. That way you know it will have been done properly! It takes that variable out of the equation.
If they still keep breaking then, honestly, use another maker.

Would like to thank every single person who posted in this thread.
Really good advice and I shall take it on board with my future purchases.
Thanks a lot,
Matt

HANG on a second!!!!!
What the hell is an inferior bat?????? Inferior because it brakes?! all bats brake at some point! I know I'll get lomblasted for saying this, but "inferior" is a bad term, its implying its the bats fault, and we don't know that.
I don't think its a handle issue.
Looks like it might be caused by cheap balls. What balls are you using??? Are you playing on grass wickets?

Firstly, I only used the word inferior when I said that is what he replaced me with before, by that I mean that I bought a grade 1 or 2 bat and he replaced it with a 3 which has about 4 grains and wasn't to my spec.
Secondly, I broke it playing with the top of the range ECB ball that is standard in all ECB County Cup Matches and other than that ball, I have only batted against tifflex balls.
I am pretty sure they all set you back at least £15/£20 a ball so I doubt it's that factor.
-
I'd say a handling issue when it splits like that, from the splice area.

Thought it might be, thank you!
Going down to coventry tomorrow so will update this post on the progress...

the word was used, or quoted in at least 4 posts, and clearly given a different context.
If you keep braking bats, this issue is with you, not the bats - often happen to people with fast hands.

Just to update this post..
Took a trip down to V Sports today, spoke to Richard (the batmaker) and he said despite my habit of bat breaking, this bat would have broke in the hands of any batsman.
Replacement being sent to me next week. Top bloke.
-
Good stuff, great service! Get it knocked in properly though! That way if anything does happen you know it's not down to the bat not being ready!
-
similar thing happen to my friend oblivion, the back and the top of his bat have basically broke off......
