Taping the face wouldn't hide a great deal if it were a laminate.
It's the edge that needs to be hidden.

Might help with performance? Perhaps allowing the laminate to be 'looser'? I noticed the Ricky Ponting, a renowned 'bat-head', had his bat taped the same way on TV last night.
