Title: Make me feel better
Post by: Leddster138 on June 26, 2013, 11:07:40 AM
So I've just spent an hefty amount of money on a new bat. I couldn't be happier with the bat but the cost has left me with a odd feeling that my wife tells me is cricket induced guilt!

I'm sure this has been a topic before but I'm hoping my fellow forumites could make be feel better by letting me know what's the most you have spent (excluding sponsorship, discount and my mate works for....etc) or would spend on a bat?

It was more than £300 but less than £400 :(

To be honest I'm not sure I'd break the £300 barrier myself.  M&H Master at £275 (Paul's sale last year) is the top for me and probably will remain so forever!)

My wife doesn't know how much I paid! I sold a players Bradbury to someone at my club and took those funds away from the total amount.

(Previous Bat - Actual Bat cost) - 10% =  Amount disclosed to the wife

I think this topic has backfired on me :)

It was one of Sangakkara's reject from Newbery. Custom shape, low middle, curved spine. I'll do a review tomorrow when I've picked it up :)

Ok, that makes me feel better - it wasn't close to that.

I picked up that bat the other week when I was in the shop at the County Ground, not bad at all.
I always do wonder with Newbery about their Pro bats though, they always seem a little too enthusiastic about dropping names...

At least when you're buying bats for yourself you can be creative about the price knowing that it wont get out. You should try buying a bat for your son, that your wife "incorrectly" beleives he doesn't need, and been slightly economical about the price only for him to blurt out the true price! Took a bit of explaining  :)

I feel your pain, But I learned out how to deal with my mrs though  ;)

I have 3 bats and my mrs thinks I have only one . I never take more than one bat out of my kit bag.
When she is around I always put the bat inside the kit bag before picking up another bat .

My Mrs knows that I have at least seven bats. But then she has four double wardrobes of clothes + a hanging garment carrier containing dresses because we got additional wardrobe space built and she'd bought enough clothes to fill it before we'd put the old ones back, five bookcases of books and three wardrobes of shoes, so I don't feel bad....

tim2000 - I've tried the shoe/clothes argument before and was informed that it was not the same  - clothes are necessities, cricket kit is not! Its easier to train the boy to keep his mouth shut in the future!

Getting back to the original post, what would you guys pay for a boys bat (size 5/6) ?

Looks like you need to get busy leveling that playing field!

Bat Buying Commandments
1. Thou shalt not let a living soul know the price you paid unless you want the wife to find out

I feel your pain, But I learned out how to deal with my mrs though  ;)

I have 3 bats and my mrs thinks I have only one . I never take more than one bat out of my kit bag.
When she is around I always put the bat inside the kit bag before picking up another bat .

2. Thou shall keep all bats hidden away at all time and never display two at the same time

Good maths equation to con the wife  :D..  I might have to do the same thing in the not to distant future  :-[

3. Thou shalt take 30%-40% off the amount divulged to the wife

To be honest I'm not sure I'd break the £300 barrier myself.  M&H Master at £275 (Paul's sale last year) is the top for me and probably will remain so forever!)

4. Thou Have a realistic idea of how much is the limited so you know when you're breaking it.

and people have paid more than 500 for laver signatures. but i do understand where you are coming from regarding the guilt. the good thing is that you are happy with the bat.

5. If thou is happy with the bat then price is irrelevant

How much??? My wife would kill me...  ;)

6. Your wife will kill you unless you follow the above :)

Or, you get yourself a wife/gf/fiancée who, upon saying you like a certain bat, offers to buy it for you!

In my experience they only do things like that at the girlfriend stage!

My wife has given up on trying to stop me collecting stuff which are too good and too much for me so she follows a simple formula. Whenever I buy an extra bat or any other hobby item on an impulse which see deems unnecessary, she will make me purchase something for her for the same amount.

I am purchasing another bat and hoping she won't know the difference in stickers.

She used to and then soon realised it is an addiction. When I first started playing guitar and was really in to it she bought me a £600 guitar and was really upset when I gave up the hobby after a few months and ended up selling it for £300 for cricket stuff.

Strangely, my wife is less bothered when I buy a new guitar, pedal, or amp.

I mentioned that I was going to H4L next week and she reminded me I already have enough bats (2).

No logic as a guitar, pedal, or amp costs £many multiples of a new bat.

I don't get it.
