Title: Coaching foreign exchange students - HELP!
Post by: Twelfth Man on July 14, 2013, 01:15:25 PM
So I have been given the task of 'coaching' some German exchange students for some hour and a half sessions. These guys have never really played cricket before and don't exactly understand the rules of the game. Not to mention that although they can speak some English, there's still a little language barrier as expected! So this is where you guys can hopefully help me out. (They do have their teachers to help with this though so it isn't too bad)

I'm in need of some ideas as to what to take up the hour and a half with? I'll probably just finish with a game of non stop cricket or something but I'm stumped as to what else to do ATM.

There's around 20 students, aged between 16-18 both male and female. Any idea's would be grateful.

30 mins fielding. Show them long barrier, catching and throwing do some drills. Then 30 mins batting start with hitting ball on bat and an egg and spoon style race. Then do grip stance back swing forward defence and drive. Then final 30 mins finish with game of continuous cricket with you doing the bowling.

I'm not really sure I can do that mate, though that would certainly keep them busy watching that spectacle! ;)

I thought about mentioning something, but I'm sure they would just mention about what we've won since... nothing! haha.

Apart from introducing the basics make sure each drill whether catching, fielding, bowling and batting or combinations of are 'game like' drills to keep the interest levels high and would keep it snappy leaving 45 mins for the end game.

I'm sure you know a lot of warm-up activities from team training e.g. catch them out (invasion game with 2 goals and teams have to throw to team mates to make their way towards opponents goal and roll the ball through to score which can then be adapted to rolling ball on ground like fielding etc)
