Title: THE EAGLE HAS LANDED
Post by: Vic Nicholas on July 16, 2013, 10:08:59 AM
My Stretton Fox thigh pad set have arrived!

They look superb and I can say hand on heart that Georgey Fox is one of the coolest cats to deal with.

I will put up a review shortly, but make no mistake, on looks alone, they are a winner!

They do everything everyone has already told you they do.

You can whack away with a mallet, and you will be fine. So if you did happen to face someone that is 90mph+, you have nothing to worry about.

From a design perspective, the main thigh pad is rather big.

While playing normal straight shots, it does not represent any problem.

When playing the hook and especially sweeps, it is somewhat awkward.

If I could design my self a custom set, I would make the top quarter of the thigh pad a separate part connected by the material, so there is a joint that moves when I raise my left leg for a hook, or when I go down on one knee to sweep.

Even so, the thigh pads are seriously fantastic!

Any questions, fire away!

I have heard that the quality of these pads are absolute top notch. Plus is you have the bespoke service, you can have colours or designs to your liking.
So with that in mind, you said that you would change the shape or make the top quarter like a joint. But would you have added any actual design or graphics to the pads?

Graphics wise, I like the simplistic look that I have ended up with. My name on them is only a safe guard to avoid them being knocked off more than anything else!

I am 5'11" tall (no shrimp), but I have the rather Celtic trait of a long trunk and slightly shortish legs. So what I mentioned above probably would not be an issue for most of you lads.

As it stands, it doesn't REALLY impinge on my stroke play...but rather would be the final perfect custom fit for me that if I were a test player, I would have sat down with George to customize it for me in such a way.

However, I must stress, that they are far and away the best thigh pads I have ever owned.

What Morrant did for superlite pads back in the 70's is what Stretton Fox have done for thigh pads in the 21st century. It is a technological advancement that people will point to in years to come as the catalyst to a new age of cricket body protection.

I rate it THAT highly.

Once again, I thank George Fox for his patience and help in creating this brilliant thigh pad set.

I also have that trait, just under six foot tall but have to buy short man trousers, and have struggled with thigh pads for years.  Generally found my best option is something like the compression shorts to hold it all in place.  Heard that a few people have done such a thing over their Foxes, how did you wear them?

I have tried them under compression shorts and it feels very tight.

So now I wear them on top of my compressions shorts for a more comfortable fit.

The BIGGEST problem I have been having with my SF's is the inner thigh pad creeping round to the back of my leg during my innings.

I have tried wearing them under compression shorts = no good, it creeps.

I have tried wearing them on top of my compression shorts = still no good, still creeps around behind my leg.

With all-in-one designs this doesn't happen because they are in a set position and cannot go anywhere.

So, if anyone has ever had a similar problem - can you be so kind as to give me some tips to avoid this re-occurring....because it is getting to the point where I feel like dispensing with the inner thigh pad all together.

Fire away guys!

I had a problem with the normal white straps as the thigh pads would slip down, so I asked George for some bespoke towelled ones and they are much better! Keep the thigh pads in place as they're much more heavy duty then the white ones and aren't as thin or flexible! Ask him for some they'll work a treat!

Sounds like you may need to bend them more aggressively to achieve a better fit.

As a rule, it is almost impossible to damage them when adjusting them. I had mine bent double over a steel barrier with all my weight going through the guard, they flexed into the shape i wanted eventually but it can be a lot of hard work. Worth it in the end though.

Totally agree with this comment. I wasn't impressed with the fit of mine until I put some hard work into bending it. I remember watching a video - on here - were someone demonstrated how much you can bend them with no ill effect. Before I bat, I kneel on the centre of mine and bend it the 'wrong way', then I put it on and let it naturally reform around my leg. For me it provides a ready good fit.

Hope this helps

I have the heavy duty towel straps as well - but it still doesn't stop the creep!

The main thigh pad stays pretty much in place.

No problems there.

The inner thigh pad has a mind of it's own though!

Would really like it to stay in place though!

No problem Cameron! It's just the white ones are thin and to elasticky in my opinion to keep them in place!

I have found a solution!!

Thanks to George who sends the additional straps (towelled and thins), I now use the thin waste strap to stop my inner thigh pad creeping around the inside of my leg!

How?

Well, I attach one end on my main thigh pad and then run it around behind my bum and attach it to the inner thigh pad!

This makes it impossible for the inner thigh pad to creep around the inside of my leg as it is being held back by the extra strap!

Problem for all intents and purposes - solved!

I will road test it in the match next weekend, but I am 100% certain, that it is not possible for the inner thigh pad to creep and get in that awkward spot between both my bloody thighs!!

Praise Jesus!

Vic you're an innovative star !

PS if anyone at all (including you Vic ;), ) would like to have a video chat so I can see the current shapes you have and look to help you get the right shape please just give me a shout on george@strettonfoxsports.com. Sometimes it's the small details that make all the difference.

Cheers !

Sorry to bring up an old topic but I have had an idea!
Has anyone else tried putting two straps on their inner thigh pad to stop the creep??

I had the idea to put the towelled straps on all my guards (as was suggested earlier) and put an additional thin white strap on my inner thigh pad. I have the towelled one on the bottom with the white one slightly higher. I then cross them over at the back of my leg so they are fastened in an X shape.

I have no idea if this will work or not but thought it was worth suggesting  :)

One of the newzealand lads in the Stretton fox thread wore the thin straps an had two on the inner so must work mate :)

I have tested this fix in the last couple games and it works perfectly.

No more inner thigh pad creep around.

My Stretton Foxes are now simply unbelievable and I almost grin like a mad man when a fast delivery bounces off my thigh like bullets off Superman's chest for leg byes!!

You are a cast iron genius George!

Cheers,
Vic

Mr Fox...mine arrived yesterday and look great thank you!! My question is though I am of the same disposition as Mr Pye so fear a wandering inner pad, how much would it cost for one of those fandangle 'X' style straps?

The way I stop mine from creeping round is putting the waist strap through the loop on the inner thigh guard and then twist the loop 360, doesnt move anywhere then. I use the old thin strap for this, and the towel straps at the bottom of the guards round my thighs.

Safety pin the loop on the inner thigh, to the top strap of the out thigh once fitted, and it doesn't creep.

I may saw the inner to the strap one day to save me playing with safety pins.
