Title: pull shot
Post by: coady123 on July 31, 2013, 10:37:41 AM
when I am batting I sit back expecting a short ball/bouncer doing this when the ball is pitched up it is stopping me playing my shots and end up playing across the line ,

can anyone help me correct this ?

I dont think sitting back will cause you to play across the line. However, if you are sitting back, use a forward press, ala jonathan trott.

I trigger (sorry Buzz) so I'm on the front foot already when the ball is released. If its short just rock your weight back onto the back foot and send it to the fence, they stop bowling short quickly enough!

Could you re-phrase that?

im waiting for a short ball to play the pull shot and because when playing the pull shot your aiming to hit it leg side , when its pitched up im trying to hit the ball legside and throwing everything at it  and playing across the line which is stopping me playing my drives

What speed is the bowling you are facing?

we are top of our league so next year will be in the premier league with overseas pros playing for quick , but this year nothing over 65 mph

not you coady the bloke that is forward pressing to pace bowling!!

I suggest to anything over 80mph you do back and across

I play in county 2 so about 80 is the quickest in the league. If I face someone genuinely quick (one of our first team bowlers who's been clocked at 85mph) I just go accross rather than forward, I don't feel comfortable triggering back

Division 2 County League mate, it's the 5th highest League so fairly competitive but not really going to set the world alight haha

Good players of short pitch bowling seem to have a small initial movement forward. I personally feel back and across leaves room for a lot of mistakes when out of touch or lacking in confidence.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like  going back & accross, it just doesn't feel comfortable to me

I only go back and across when I feel the bowling is quick enough to do so. Otherwise I just see ball, hit ball.

I don't even go back if its quick, I just go across instead of slightly forward. That said I'm quite tall so if the bowler is quick enough to get one at an uncomfortable height well played to them, I back myself to get bat on it regardless.

Coady - I think your issue is that you are afraid of the ball and are hanging back anticipating the ball to hit you.

You need to work on your technique (there are loads of threads on here about that - please use the search function) and you need to work on your confidence. This will come - as a youngster I am guessing that you face boys who are much bigger than you so this will pretty much be the hardest time for you while you catch up in size and confidence.
Have lots of practice.

As a young player I would not advise trying to bring in a trigger movement as you need good coaching to get it right - stand still weight evenly balanced through your feet and stay side on through the backward defensive shot.

As you get stronger you can build in the pull back in.

As mentioned I don't really like trigger movements, but I especially don't get the advantages of the back and across movement. I realise many people use them to great success. I think there are better ways or better trigger movements you can use to fast bowling.

Ponting was as good a pull shot player as any in history and played it with a front foot movement not a back and across

I'm an off spinner who can hold a bat. My first training session since shattering my finger tonight (only did it 3 weeks ago so it's still healing but I've said I'll play Saturday) so I'll see if I can arrange a filmed net session while I'm there.

Hampshire League county 2, 5th highest league so fairly competitive. We had a Bermudan U19 international playing for us before he went to play in an ICC event. Not sure if there are any other "pros" though
