Title: Polishing balls
Post by: ajmw89 on August 02, 2013, 08:42:17 AM
Are you the designated ball polisher in the team?
This thread is for all you ball shiners to share your tips and tricks for getting the ball to swing.
(NB I am not condoning ball tampering, shining tips only!)

Personally, I'm a fan of saliva and furious rubbing on the back of the thigh.  I find the key is to be sparing with the saliva. Never been a fan of using sweat on the ball

All about Worthers originals or some form of hard boiled sweet, it makes the saliva stickier/ thicker and I find helps with shiiiiiiiiiiiine

This, worthers are in their own wrapper which is handy but pear drops do a job too if you keep them in a bag in your pocket

It's not all about shining but also roughing up the other side of the ball. On most club decks balls can be shined pretty easily but the trick to getting late swing is the rough side. I have sometimes found that getting a ball wrecked on both sides, picking a side to shine and soaking the ball in sweat creates sharp swing. I've also noticed when a lands in a puddle outside the boundary, maybe on the covers for example, it get's soaked one side and reverses for a few balls. It's all about creating an imbalance in the ball either in weight or condition, enough to get it moving in the air. Work just as hard on that rough side!

i work on both sides as nick said, and let everyone know which side your trying to get shiny, saliva and hard work works well but also a little suncream on the inside of your white or undershorts if you wear them works a treat
its what we used at school level to shine the ball people couldnt understand how quickely we were getting it to shine, a tip i picked up form a lad at hallam cc :P

We supply our own match balls in our league. So easily done for some.

We actually provide our own and use a new one for both innings, so don't see why you'd bother to start with

once tried suncream around the back of the neck. The skipper came up to me after about 5 overs and told me to stop it as the other opening bowler couldn't hold the ball!

Wrigleys extra call breeze chewing gum works a treat shining one side, I can get it to shine up a 40 over ball that hasn't been looked after a real treat!
