Title: The next big guy?????
Post by: himanshuvohra on August 10, 2013, 06:02:43 AM
Hey lads.....as the golden age of cricket(according to me) is nearing its end...with only 2 members of that era(sachin tendulkar and jacques kallis) left and in a year or two even they will call it ends...

Which other player according to you can rise upto the standards their predecessors have set.....

According to me....I see only two players

Alistair cook and virat kohli

Because they have been very consistent....other players with talent rise up in a series or two and then fall in shadows

Sanga amd jayawardene are from that era only with only few years left...I was thinking of players who are at present under 30

Pretty harsh to leave Steyn out of this.

The lad's stats are brilliant compared to his contemporaries.

Couple to add to your current players list, who history will judge well; Chanderpaul and Younus Khan...

Steyn, Amla, De Villiers (though all could be considered contemporaries of Bell, KP and Clarke as they started around the same time...).  Agree re; Cook and Kohli as stand outs at the mo...

IN terms of younger players coming through;

Aussie bowlers Bird, Starc appear to have a lot of potential.  Pattinson is he can stay fit.

I like the look of Trent Boult, Azhar Ali, Joe Root, Shakib Al Hasan.

Players I really hope kick on, for the good of competitive test cricket - Kane Williamson and Rutherford (NZ), Khawaja, Warner.  I also hope this Robson kid at Middlesex opts to play for Aus, as he won't get close to the England team if he's an opener.  The Aussies should be looking to pick him to test his allegiances.

I really hope the promise the Windies are showing continues; Darren Bravo and Narine have a lot of potential and for a totally left field one, Kyle Jarvis of Zimbabwe; provided they get the opportunities to play more test cricket.

Hopefully this will spark some debate!

I think we're missing the point somewhat - Sachin and Kallis are accepted as all time greats (or as slightly pudgy blockers with one eye on their averages) as opposed to just the best players of their day.  Yes, there are lots of good to great players coming up through the ranks, but it is not easy to see many who will be spoken of with such reverence in a couple of decade's time.

I think Cook is well on his way to becoming a great, certainly in England's history as he already holds the record amount of centuries and is under 30 with plenty of time left yet

When you say next 'big guy', do you mean players 25 and under?

Alma's already a great batsman.

Cook's a pretty good batsman.

Pujara's a good young player.

Kohli's a great ODI player and a decent Test player.

Kane Williamson could be a might fine player when it's all said and done.
