Title: Who is the Greatest Bowler in Test Cricket with a maximum of 30 Caps.
Post by: The_Bird on August 12, 2013, 06:23:22 AM
Ok so reading the Ashes thread yesterday lots of names were being thrown around as not being as good as Ryan Harris who himself has only played 14 test matches.

My Question is who is the best test bowler with a maximum of 30 caps.

There is one guy who stands head and shoulders above the rest and his stats are quite incredible.

how long will it take for someone to find him.

And he's English...

Found this out the other day, while procrastinating from studies on Youtube. Sydney Barnes is my guess. :)

His stats are amazing and is probably the more
recognised name.

There is another who played slightly earlier.

I'd have a dart at Spofforth (but not with a bat in my hand) Not so many test matches back then.

Ah right, just looked it up. Would never have gotten that! Only knew of Sydney Barnes because of listening Geoff Boycott and his list of top XI bowlers. :-[

Easy. George Lohmann.

His first class stats are a bit silly, he was the guy who's stats are the best.

Let the debate continue.

What's everyone's top 3?

Sydney Barnes, for my the greatest bowler of all time. Worth reading about in Amol Rajan's book "Twirlymen", every write-up from that period of time seems to wax lyrical about him! Tiger O'Reilly has to be up there as well, aaaand we'll go with Spofforth as well. Too many to pick from really, here's the list of them by wickets taken, there are some great names there! http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;filter=advanced;orderby=wickets;qualmax1=30;qualmin1=0;qualval1=matches;template=results;type=bowling (http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;filter=advanced;orderby=wickets;qualmax1=30;qualmin1=0;qualval1=matches;template=results;type=bowling)

Peter Pollock, Colin Croft, John Gleeson, Saaed Ajmal (maybe not for long though!), Harold Larwood, Bert Ironmonger, and JJ Ferris just to name a few outstanding bowlers. What you'd expect to find is that those not playing more than 30 games are either back when Test matches were less frequent, really prone to injury, caught up in politics (Saffers for example) or just not good enough, but some of those bowlers are genuine test greats, O'Reilly for example was (according to the Don) the greatest bowler he ever faced!

not checked cricinfo but I assume Simon Jones never made it past the 30 test mark. Not the greatest but certainly might of been if injuries hadn't played a part.

Bryce McGain....

Simon Jones was the best bowler in that England 4.
That Brisbane knee knack was one of the most horrible things I've seen.
