Keep them down south, bit closer to Southampton if possible, and I'll see if I can get the day off I there's another one! The 600 odd mile round trip meant this one was a bit far for me :(

Jake Miller (Vitas Cricket),Arvind (CUSTOM-BATS), Gary Shacklady (mate of Pistols, not on the forum yet), Chris Holman (Soulman), Ian Hodgson (Manormanic), Jamie Mullay (Farnham Quins 2), Pete 'Pistol' Dickenson (pistol101), Nick Saunders (uknsaunders), Ciaran Woodcock (Ciaran)

think I got that right!

Starting from the beginning:-

Left home at 5.40am for the long trip south. On route I picked up Pistol and Gary from Marlow and diverted north round a surprisingly quiet M25 to get Ciaran. Loaded with bodies we sped down through the Kent countryside and finally got to Matt's H4L Workshop around 9.30am:-

Chris was already there and Matt welcomed us with a much needed coffee. For the next hour we talked bats and cricket, played with some cracking bats and had a look at the new clefts Matt had got back in. Many thanks to Matt for showing us around.

On to the match. In some disarry due to procricketer going awol and not picking up poor Charlie15 (see another thread for that one) we had 9 players and I begged my opposite number to let us bat in the hope of getting reinforcements. Jake and Arvind went out to bat:-

The ball was moving around and Jake was very watchful:-

However Jake and Arvind went a bit quicker than we would like and at 11-2 things didn't look good. However Chris started playing some shots:-

Gary, after some good bowling from the home teams bowlers started to also cut loose:-

With both guys passing 50, things looked better at lunch when we reached 135-2. A lovely lunch it was too:-

Post lunch report coming up in a bit.

During lunch we agreed with our hosts to let two batsman bat again and they would provide us with two sub fielders. Bringing us up to 11 a side. Things didn't start to well post lunch as Chris, Gary and Jamie fell in a short space of time to leave us 182-5. We were lucky to have man mountain (and moving as quickly as one thanks to a bad knee) Ian and specialist pinch hitter Pistol at the crease. Ian nurdled for a bit and Pistol tried to smack it as far as he could:-

We finished on 289-6 off 56 overs. Since Stone had scored 310 the day before and our bowling attack was threadbare to say the least. We were a little apprehensive about was to follow.

Bowling isn't our thing really and being down to 9 meant we probably had 4 maybe 5 specialist bowlers. This consisted of Pistol, who's main job is to buy wickets. Ciaran who has only been playing a couple of years, mainly in friendly cricket. Chris who is a wicketkeeper. Me with my dodgy back, Achilles etc. Gary who has a broken finger and hadn't bowled for 2 weeks. Maybe Jamie to fill in. I was hoping we could drag it out to the last 20 overs, which meant bowling an hour before tea and an 75 mins post tea.

As it turned out I needn't of worried, the guys as a group bowled out of their skins.

Pistol and Ciaran set the tone. The pre-tea session was 40-1 off 15 overs. Pistol rolling down the hill and knocking over a Kent Div 1 batter bowled. Keeping the batsman pinned to the crease with some added movement. Ciaran doing the donkey work up hill and being unlucky not to snare a batter with a couple of edges not going to hand. Skipper Saunders, having watched plenty of test cricket decided to do the 1 over before tea spin tactic and sneaked in a maiden.

Post tea Skipper continued to throw down some darts keeping the batsman tied down. Chris came on at the top end and started to work through the oppo batting, to everyone's surprise. Bowling the same full length as the opening bowlers he started to benefit from the pressure and catches were chipped into the circle. Chris now charging down the hill like a telltubby on speed made the oppo crumble to 113-8, backed up by some good catching Arvind's sharp chance at gully was the pick of the catches. Chris was on a hat-trick at one point. Not bad for a keeper? However, skipper and Chris needed a well deserved breather and made way for Gary and Jamie. Had things gone to plan, that might of been the end of it. Matt (Barton) hit a massive six off Gary and then charged down the deck, missing the ball on the way. Jake couldn't quite deal with the bounce and a tough chance went down. At the other end Jamie had a reasonable catch dropped off the number 10. It was only a matter of time, wasn't it?

Well the number 10 could hit a ball and that's what he did. Matt can hit a ball and that's what he did. Jamie and Gary disappeared for 58 in 4 overs. It was a big ask for both the lads to bowl against two fine hitters of the ball. Ciaran and Skipper came back on but now the batsman were showing how flat the deck was and the next 4 overs going for 30. Highlight in all this hitting was the number 10 hitting a massive six that hit the tiles on the house across the road. The 100 partnership came and went. Pistol and Chris were recalled and after a couple more expensive overs Pistol finally bowled Watsham for 60. The number 11 didn't last to long thankfully and CBF sneaked home by 33 runs.

A fantastic day's cricket had finished but Stone CC were brilliant in every respect on and off the pitch. We had some food and beers after the game. Chatted with the oppo, had a good laugh and enjoyed the hospitality. Weary yes, but what a great day.

Actually just reading the match report back, I've under played Matt's part in all this. Matt batted brilliantly in a dire situation and is a quality batsman.  Very good through the covers and pretty quick on the pull.

Add to that his help in setting up the fixture and his hospitality on the day. Like to say a big thankyou to Matt for everything he did.

Despite Chris's heriocs and we was superb with bat and ball, everybody played their part. Jake took on the responsibility of opening the batting and keeping for 50 odd overs. Arvind was unlucky to glove one and despite a shoulder injury was excellent in the field. Jamie was excellent in the field and threw himself around. Gary played an excellent knock with the bat and both him and Chris seemed set for tons. Ciaran did the donkey work and helped build the pressure that ultimately won us the game. Ian played a vital knock when we wobbled. Pistol does what he does, hit the ball hard and bowl some intelligent seam up.

I wanted to cut all those balls i'm leaving into the hedge. I'm surprised i lasted so long before having a wipe.

Describing my missed stumping as a tough chance, interesting. It is one of the worst things i've done on a cricket field! i had so much time to wait for it and whip the bails off, i just lost concentration.

Great day out, interesting to see some faces, old and new.

Bring on next years 2 day game!

This would make a great pre season match and to get us all in form for start of season!

Although I'm a bit worried GarretJ mispelt "Southern" it's quite an easy word to spell.

We all had brainstorms at various points yesterday. I bowled a bad over, Chris slogged when he was cruising to a ton and then Gary did the same thing. It happens and we'd be Pro's if it never did!

Excuse me Mr Saunders, skipper, sir I am not having my name tarnished with an accusation of getting out to a slog it was a mid timed drive from a ball that turned a bit thank you very much :-[

Thanks to all the lads it was a great great game and enjoyed by all, really nice to meet all you guys and there was some good talent on show and for a team that was put together we did very well.

Would love a north vs south game, south will win easy just got to bowl on a length and watch them all get confused lol.

Chatting to the oppo afterwards I think a return fixture is defiantly on the cards 2 day or 1 day I think they really enjoyed the day as much as us.

There was quite a nice selection yes, jake @ vitas had a lovely Laver & Wood and Ian had a couple of lovely trees with grips attached lol. Garry had a old put very nice Newbery and Pistol had, well possibly the most beat up and abused piece of willow I have ever seen but it did the job. Oh and mine isn't bad either :D

Wish I had a pic of pistols shark. It had a big dent in the top side edge and looked like he had coloured the face red with felt tip  :D. Hit a nice six off his toes though so it cant be too bad.

I'll echo everyone's comments...it was a great day. Although that was a long time in the car with Grampa Saunders driving!!

The Shark has taken offence, it's a well loved piece of willow! I'll get the camera out to show it's custom look.

Manormanic... bad knee? He's just slow, whether fit or not - trust me I've seen him hobbling after my bowling the last 2 weeks

Hmmm...really?  One week I was half way up Scafell and the other you didn't keep the ball inside the ropes enough for anyone to chase it!

The Picasso was reaching 90mph at some stages on the way down! The way back might of been a bit slower...
