Anyway, to start the story off, I need to go back a few weeks
Was in my loft putting my now useless Adidas pads with all my old cricket gear, when I found my trust old gm(believe it was a hero but stickers went years ago)
Now this was a big bat back in the day, weighed 3lb with its two grips and scored meafewthousands runs over its years. Unfortunately it was retired when it became more poly filler than willow.
Anyway, I couldn't believe how small the edges were, and how tiny it looked compared to my b3s, gn oblivion and gm zona. Which got me thinking,
I don't want oversize edges Anymore! I want a decent edge, but then lots upon lots of meat where it matters.
So I began the search. Not much off the shelf tickled my fancy. So custom people.
Do I get a 3rd b3? Can't really afford a 3stripe. And don't want anything less.
So search the forum. Red ink prices look good.
His previously made bats look good.
So made contact,
Traditional edges
Lowish middle
No concaving
Spine high and to the toe
No excess weight in shoulders
2.12-13
Short handle
No blemishes
7-10 grains.
John got back in touch, said he could do that, we sorted a few details then he sent me a choice of willow.
I choice one that had 7nice grains. Unfortunately on the finished bat you can only see 5, as 2are under the edge tape and very close to it.(not that it bothers me)
But the. Edges run nice and straight though the toe!
It arrived today and I could not be happier. It's a beaut. Put a second grip on, and it pics up lovely, and the middle is. Right where I like it.

So a big thanks to john. Spot on. just need to organise with itsjustcricket to have it knocked in for next year.

glad your happy with the bat. was a nice change to make something alot more traditional and work with you to tweak things as i go.
-
I am more than happy with the bat.
Seems I'm the only one interested in no concaving and smaller edges though.
-
Very good idea , and this is something I have been thinking for the last few weeks .
My next custom made bat will be something similar to this , very minimum edges and zero concaving.
-
Looks a lovely bat. I much prefer small edgees/no concaving/high spine combo too!
-
The edges actually look relatively thick for a traditional bat, although I think that's because it's pretty heavy! Looks to have a lovely long middle, hope it serves you well! I'm a fan of minimal/no concaving, but prefer a reasonably thick edge!

Nope, i'm with you on this one :)
Nice looking stick that
-
It does also look a lovely bat too!
-
I looked at it and thought "You know what, that looks a lot like a screaming cat"...
-
I like concaving.
But I also like this bat. Great work, John.
-
Another classic John ;)
-
no im on your side!! hate these new style bats. im sure there is some scientific reason why most bats are now styled like this but i cant help but think its all a bit of a gimmick. the traditional style gives you the meat where you need it most.
i have had a go at shaping my own bat in the traditional shape. much to the disgust of some chaps at the club!!
i say bring the old style back!!!
-
looks lovely. am definitely a fan of no concaving but then i love big edges. great work john.
-
I used a bat with what appeared to be no bow, but certainly with smaller edges, in nets this week and for the first time in ages I was timing the ball. Don't think it was the edges, could have been the lack of bow, definitely interesting.
-
My only ever ton was when I swapped from my Uzi to a tradition Hunts County bat.
-
sorry for hijacking the thread a bit. I came back into cricket after 25 years out and bats have obviously changed a hell of a lot. Maybe the older style suited me better?

Just looked at there website. It does a tad. Gladly this one has better stickers, and a far better price tag.

Ill happily take that as a compliment. Thanks for the feedback guys. Most importantly the customer is happy so that's always good to hear.
-
what are the measurements for the max toe/edge/spine height please? Be interesting to see how big a bat without concaving can be.
-
This bat is(measurements via john)
66mm spine
20-30mm toe
20mm edge at toe
25mm at its peak.
Tapers to about 13mm at the shoulders.
I suppose ultimate size for a bat comes down to density off cleft and weight the batsmen is willing to use.
A 3lb plus bat made from the "test" match density cleft would be huge!
-
Hope it plays really well, I'm sure it will! Tim's right, it does look quite a lot like a Screaming Cat. How do you find the handle? I had a bat from John, and found that he made the best oval handle I had ever held in my hands. Shame I couldn't get on with the bat! :-[
-
I've mentioned on a previous thread that I simply could not get used to edging a sweep with a concaved bat and feeling like I'd middled it.
Whereas this is clearly an advantage to some, as someone who's old enough to have grown up exclusively with traditional shapes and edges I simply couldn't get used to it, hence going back to a more traditional shape.
That's a lovely bat, great job to all involved...

Why not go for the best of both worlds. Traditional shaped bat (high spine, no concaving and moderate edges) with TAS inserts. Thin edges with TAS inserts perform better than 40mm+ edges found on modern bats. Visit our facebook page for more info www.facebook/tasbats01 (http://www.facebook/tasbats01)
-
Forgive my ignorance but can you explain how the edges perform better?
I want the middle to be the bit that performs.
:D

Agree why spend £500 on a bat when £200 bat and 10 one to one coaching sessions might be of more use. Big fan of proper bowling machine practise to improve batting.

Not as much as my coaching through the winter was!!!!!
And not as much as my time spending this winter 2 bats is what i bought last season average of 600 runs through each so happy with my return mate.

Fair enough mate, 600 runs through 2 bats would justify any coaching costs in my mind (I'd be happy with 1000 for the season to be honest)
-
I don't want a tas insert bat, mainly cos there not grade a. And when I play rep cricket, and umpire picked up on a laminate, and told him he couldn't use it.
Huge bump on this thread too. The bat is on it's way back to john as there seems to be a vibration issue, hoping it's a dud handle.

no 800 through the crown and around 300 through the other mate always score more runs than you spend is my theory
