Title: bat breaker balls
Post by: geeders on September 08, 2013, 08:48:30 PM
Played a game today where the opposition were using a rock hard ball - think it was a cheap reader.

They managed to break the corner off one of our guys bats -   (ricochet 1000) split another bat and cracked the toe of yet another bat. Fortunately mine wasnt one of them, but I've been asked to get the split bat repaired and glue the other one. The ricochet however is dead.

To top of off, it was an important game where the winner would get promoted. Not blaming the ball for us losing, but it was a factor as the ball sounded awful off the middle.

Did mention it the opposition and umpires but none of them wanted to know.

That sucks, does the guy still have the receipt? It will be within warranty time, so not too much of a hassle, unless he gets an absolute plank as a replacement! Does your league not have rules that state a certain brand and range of ball must be used for all 50 over games?

Pick the ball up. Lob it into the nearest trees/bushes/river. Tell the oppo you are not batting against a rock.

Stand your ground and refuse, they soon get the picture.

It's worked for me a couple of times.

Doesn't help the broken bats much, but I'm sure there will be other occasions, there are enough people buying crap balls.

I think he does still the receipt - the owner is a young lad who had the bat bought for his birthday at the start of the season so hopefully he can claim under warranty.

We do have restrictions on what balls can be used on Saturdays, but not on Sundays.

Blyth

Gone down hill since I was there as a lad  ;)

I know a few lads who play on a Saturday will pass the message on subtly! Who's Sunday captain?

Not trying to be awkward far from it.

But top spec bats are designed to be used against decent quality balls.

Whose fault is it that the bat has broken. Is it fair that the manufacturer has to repair/replace / refund. Surely the owner has a duty too.

like I said I'm not being awkward, just posing the question.

I’m guessing from a customer point of view, there will always be an expectation or belief that a £300 bat would last more than a season. Obviously a retailer has very little control offer what happens after the bat is sold, but the way this bat broke wasn’t a particularly quick bowler, and the guy using it wasn’t playing a particularly aggressive shot.

The type of ball used did seem a bit hard, but in all honesty the other 2 bats that were damaged had already been repaired in the past. As such, as my original post was probably more of a moan that the opposition used a cheap ball - and this was an aspect in us losing a crucial game.

This was the bat I am gluing back for someone else. It used to be my bat, so I know it had already had some damage in the same place.

I had the same breakage as that ricochet on my biggest kahuna.
Got it fixed and works well!

I put a thread about it nearly 2 weeks ago
