Depends what pace you get hit in the side of the helmet at!

To prevent getting hit use the bit of wood in you hand to hit the ball ;)

having batted both with ear pieces and without I can confirm that on those windy days the foam ear piece reduces the whistling sound of the wind rushing through the grill

I don't think they are needed but helmets look so much better with them in

Unless they're pink, where removing them and replacing them with grey ones becomes compulsory! ;)

I'm exactly the same as butterfingerz. I'd recommend keeping them in for those cold, windy days. Nothing more irritating than it whistling in your ears as the bowler's about to bowl! I doubt it will minimize any protection level of your lid. Just make sure that your grille's in the right place and you'll be fine!
