Title: My Newbery Kudos + 2014 Mjolner updated pics of kudos
Post by: SOULMAN1012 on September 17, 2013, 02:38:22 PM
Hi guys I popped down to Hove today after speaking to the guys at Newbery about the new Kudos. I swathe Facebook pic last week and instantly feel in love with the profile and colour scheme, no idea why it just made me think Wow. Newbery told me that the new Kudos is not officially available until the end of the month but after some begging they said I could pop down and they would see  what they could do. I was told that I  could pick either from pro bin of clefts or normal. I didn't think Newbery had a pro bin anymore but was told that they do but they were more expensive and not openly advertised.

So I arrived this morning at 9am sharp at hove and saw Michael and was shown the 3 Kudos bats that Tim has made so far all from clefts from there pro bin. They were 3 of the nicest lightest clefts I have ever seen, the stickers are designed in the same way as the Cenkos butwith Aqua green as the colour scheme and they look really cool and minimal. Anyway I was told these 3 will be going to the Lords trade showon Thursday and that they were then going to a Sussex player. Wasn't told which one although I did try and find out, I picked one up and fell in love with its size, profile and pick up and said I wanted this bat please. A quick phone call was made to someone and I was told that it must be my lucky day as I would be allowed to have this bat as long as I agreed to legit go to the trade show first and Newbery will send on to me, no problems I said.

So the bat I choose has dead straight grains and when I hit the face with the mallet I can honestly say the mallet almost came out of my hand the rebound was that good, there were bats from the non pro bins with more grains and bigger bits of wood but this seemed awesome in terms of performance. I was offered a few custom touches like more wood removed from back or lower spine etc  choose to leave exactly as was. I put it on the scales and it weighs 2.5 in current naked stare and will finish under 2.8 with hammer edge, stickers and grip, whilst having 38mm edge, perfect

For any of you going to lords show you can see my bat there and it's has my initials C.H on the shoulder

Whilst I was there I also saw another what I assumed was another custom profile, I asked and was told that this was the new profile for the Mjolner for 2014, the same design just bigger in terms of edges etc, picked it up and again the balance was exceptional so I grabbed that as well   :-[. I have never seen a bad Mjolner so managed to bag this as a 5 star plus a little discount

Here are some pics of my Kudos, the Mjolner and Hove ground. I am also the first customer to own a Newbery Kudos so i was tolda and had my picture taken with my bat and put on Instagram, not that I know anything about social media. Was told I had 20 likes but assume that's the bat not me  :(

That stickered up Kudos looks amazing in the background! Glad to see that they haven't concaved the Kudos much to get it to that size. :) How much did this all cost you?! I'm pretty sure I saw your name on Jake's preorder list twice when I went to visit haha. :) I'm guessing it will be stickered up as an SPS?

Wow, bat-gasm.

How much have they set you back as a pair?

Kinda wishing I hadn't bought a flat now as I'd be able to afford more bats!!

Massively jealous of this :( love Newbery kit just live too far away to go down to Hove and I'd have to save up for ages to be able to afford a trip lol would love to go down and get a job lot of gear. Couple of bats, pads, gloves and bag. Damn I hate this forum sometimes.

Major kit envy!!!  >:( haha

The one in the back ground was the best looking bat in the whole place, but didn't sound quite as nice to me as the one I wanted and was allowed to buy.

Yea I have 2 GN and a bubble on pre-order as well. The Kudos was £400 as it was from the pro bin and the Mjolner was penciled as a players but there is a few marks on the back so he said he would do it as a 5 star which is £150 so £550 total but I managed to talk them down a little bit. Yea the Kudos will only be available in SPS grade

Kudos looks good - I will look out for yours on Thursday, Chris - may even be tempted to run off with it!  ;)

Surprised you like the pick-up on the new Mjolnir though.  I find them very bottom heavy indeed, as I said in my video review.  We have one in 2.8 that feels almost 2.10...

Oooft, quite a hit on the wallet I'll bet! Not the most stunning grain-wise, but it has to be a belter to be in the pro bin. Based on initial feel, how does it compare to your other top bats?

Take out the Cenkos this is the best that Newbery offer at £400. Based on a GN Legend at £600 or GM at £550 I think its not to bad. When buying top end personally I think Newbery and Salix and smaller handmade companies offer great vale for money.

There really is something special about a top Newbery. Ive been looking for one for a long time especially a C6 and I now have Tims Uzi C6 on the way over. If I dont get along with it I will genuinely keep it as a piece of history.

Just bite the bullet and get one mate!
Or go for my method of not spending £400 on one bat, spend it on 3 or 4 instead!  ;)

Please don't run off with it Paul, I'm missing her already.

Funny you say that as the Mjolner I have is amazingly well balanced, so much so that when I did out it on the scales there I though I had gone mad. It weighs 2.13 but feels like a 2.9 remarkable bat that one.

No like I said there were other bats in different profiles that had much better grains, especially the GT profile there were at least 5 that had 15+straight grains but this just pings like a dream and the fact it's so big and will come in perfectly at my preferred weight of 2.8 just sealed the deal. I was told that if I wanted more grains, heartwood etc Tim would pick this for me but I'm not massively bothered about huge amounts of grains 7+ is fine with me as long as even and straight.

In terms of my other top bats the HitsHard Grade one I used ths year is a seriously powerful bat with just as nice pick up and balance, this knocks spots off the GN X181 I have at the moment and picks up a lot better than the Icon players bat I have as we'll. all in the 2 best bats I have are from in my opinion the 2 best bat makers around TK & Kember. Although I am talking to David at B3 about a DB2 that he has promised me goes like te clappers as well.

I do feel that generally if you take your time and actually get to see your bat before you buy and mallet test they will all play pretty much as well as one another, some may have slightly bigger middles etc but when you get it out the screws on most bats it flys. Half the fun is buying and owning top end bats for me although i reckon these 2 will get a fair bit of use next year.

If the Kudos will only be available in SPS grade, does this mean the Tour will now become available in Player/5 Star?? Now, that would be something...

I guess I will find out on Thursday, but might you know anything about this already, Chris??

I didn't ask that mate, the tour shape personally never appealed to me. I was shown a few to make sure the Kudos was the best option for me but I just didn't like how they felt or picked up.

Would be a great seller if they did, they said they are dropping the thruxton for next year.

We have a Mjolnir SPS in stock in the new profile - it has 17 grains.  In this video, I compare it to the old profile (which I prefer)...

Looks like Paul's got one ;)

I must say, that music at the beginning doesn't sit well with the usually sunny reviews that follow.

We have a Mjolnir SPS in stock in the new profile - it has 17 grains.  In this video, I compare it to the old profile (which I prefer)...

Newbery Mjolnir SPS Cricket Bat Review - New Profile Shape for 2014 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHdeJbB_m50#)

Haha, Paul I'm sure I was at least one of the people to correct you on the pronunciation of Mjolnir in a youtube comment... :-[ As much as I liked the original shape, I definitely fall into the bracket of "front foot clubber". I'm eyeing up this bad boy for next season. Looks like it'll land a "hammer blow" to a few cricket balls...

Hi guys so my Kudos arrived today and I must say fully finished it is a thing of beauty, it was amazing in its naked form but fully dressed is amazing. I don't have any digital scales at present but I asked Michael to weigh before sending and it was 2.8.2 with the grip toe guard and hammer edge so a huge bat for the weight. Fished to very high standard with a single grip but I asked for a few extra and there were 2 more in the box.

Looks nice, but is it just me, or is that Kudos a different one to the one you picked?  ???

That is one of the reasons I really like this bat, understated style and simple classic stickers. That's were I think Newbery went wrong with the Tomahawk, tried being in your face and there not that kind of brand really.

I like it when players have to get close to have a look I between overs etc or when its a drink break and the oppo pick your bat up while your having a quick re fresh

Ah right, could be my eyes playing tricks on me, but this looks grainier and has heartwood, while the one in the OP has no heartwood. :-[ Unless the one in the OP wasn't the one you picked!

That's a good point, I think that if they had done a JN tribute with stickers like these, it would have went well!

no Chad is right, the bat in the OP definately looks different, the one in OP has no heartwood, and has graping on the back, latest picture has heartwood and no graping?

I will email Michael at Newbery tomorrow to make sure but they wrote my name a around the top of the handle and on top of the handle.

I do agree with the comments that they are some apparent differences. The OP pics where when the bat was in a very raw state and has since had a bit of wood removed.

This is still an amazing bat but I will not be happy if Newbery have changed my bat over and even more so if they have tried to hide this by writing my name on this as well. It has 001 stamped on the shoulder as the first Kudos sold to the public and these were stamped into the shoulder when I was originally there.
Would they go to this much trouble to hide the bat if it wasn't the original bat I sent?

no idea mate, but as you have said, it does look like a different bat, I highly doubt they would have gone to all the trouble, but stranger things have happened?

It is odd, maybe a pro was really wanting that one, so they replaced it. It is a better looking one, no doubt, but if you picked a bat on feel and response, and paid £400 for it, you should get what you wanted. You should drop him an email, I think you may get a discount hahaha. ;)

This bat did have one of there county pro's initials on when I picked it up but was assured that was fine. I have pinged off an email and attached some photo's. either way both are amazing bats, and pick up and perform off the mallet the same but the principle is wrong if it transpires they have done something like swap bats over regardless of this looks a nicer bat.

Things like this are part of the reason why we never leave a supplier without taking all the stock we have handpicked with us, unlike some other retailers.

Not saying I don't trust them, as aside from being very slapdash and classically old school British in the way things are run, the cricket industry is full of great people, but mistakes do happen.

Further sanding/finishing may explain the marks/graping on the back disappearing, but the difference in the heartwood in the two pictures is pretty unmissable.

Evening all. Newbery replied to me today and they have said that the bat I received was indeed the same bat I picked during visit. Like Jake has said the bat in the OP was not fully sanded, polished or finished.

They did state that they would not have changed my choice even if a pro had walked in and wanted it. At the end of the day there do appear to be some differences between the two but I have no reason to believe Newbery would lie to me and I am very happy with the bat. I did have a few changes made to this bat including having the blade shortened by a few mm to replicate the Uzi model they did a few years ago and also had some work done on the handle to make into a thin semi oval.

So, the old conspiracy theory of "is this not the same bat/cleft?" has struck once again, and taken over a thread, turning it into something completely different than what it was intended for...

Glad Newbery have confirmed it's the same bat, though.  I, for one, knew it would be all along!

I will be honest and few a few minutes last night was analysing the bat and was thinking to myself I've been had over here. But I could not see why Newbery would do something like that, as there was no need. I'm confident it's the same bat mainly because Newbery have said so and also the pick and balance is as good as I remember.

Stop over analysing everything and judge the Kudos bat on how it is!
If it picks up as stunningly as before. And if it feels superb, not to mention tapping up perfectly, then surely you are happy with it?
The important thing is being happy that you got a bat you'll love and that you'll hit runs with! Granted, that not many would pay that price....but the customer being a happy bunny is the important thing!

It's not the same bat.
Newbery have lied on their e-mail.
This makes the bat worthless and you won't score any runs with it.
I'll take it off your hands for you, at a reduced price obviously, because I'm very generous like that.

From the photos it clearly doesn't look like the same bat but photos and rough clefts can be misleading. Blemishes can be revealed but grains never change

On the first pic there is a grain that comes out of the right hand side of the splice and I don't see it on the finished bat but it's hard to see on the photo

Only you can analyse it in detail to the first picture. I don't see why they would swap it but strange things happen in this world

After all of that the bat you have does look nice

In the end all that matters is wether you love the bat you have. It will be interesting to hear what your thoughts on the bat after a few net sessions and where it it ranks in your very impressive bat collection.

On first glance and on pick up its on a par with my AJK. Performance wise I will update once I have used a few times.
