Title: Heavier bat wanted... Decisions decisions
Post by: Gingerbusiness on September 21, 2013, 05:18:09 PM
Hi all.

I have two CA 12000 LE TRD's for next season - both are 2lb8 and chose both of them on the basis that I play alot of long form cricket and a lighter bat allows me better touch and manouverability at the crease.

There are times however that I want a bat which is just extremely destructive in power and a bit heavier in weight (For 20/20 and last 5 overs) - plus netting with a heavier bat has always benefitted me when going out into the middle.

I am considering getting a Gray Nicolls Oblivion Extreme Pro. Has anyone had one? Are they good? I would be looking at the lighter end (2lb12-2lb14). They are selling on sports direct for £140 at the moment.

If not this, are there any better options out there?

Thanks in advance! :)

I have a laver ultra 2-12 for sale if your interested. Used in 1 game and 1 net. Did'nt get on with these flat face bats. Anyhow it's an inch shorter blade, inch longer handle. 49/50mm edges.

You mean practise with heavier bat but play with lighter?

Yes. For some reason this has always worked for me. Probably because it forces me to come forward and tend to drive more along the deck after doing it for a while

I do that as well. I don't net with a heavier bat as my net bat is usually last year's, but while I'm waiting to bat, every 20 mins I start shadow batting with 2 bats. And I do a bunch just before I walk to the crease. I was inspired ever since I saw Mike Hussey do that when I was a kid(still am a kid)

This isn't an easy decision anymore. :o

I was gonna say - 2lb15 must be custom as most LE ranges of Asian bats come between 2'7 and 2'10

2.12 mate 2.10 would be medium or medium light. 2.7 to 2.12 seems standard for most makes.

Seen too many Sports Direct GNs just break. So unless you are buying from a specialist I would advise against GN.

My mistake  :D

But for the risk of returning to the topic - has anyone used one of the bigger GN bats?  ???

Thanks Palmist.

I know Sports Direct isn't anyone's, or should not be anyone's, first stop for cricket bats - but their prices ATM are very hard to beat!

At least try and pick one from a store rather than online.

Have a couple of Oblivion extremes, they are in my opinion very nice bats, though mine are literally at the extreme end of their weight range (one at 3.3 and another at 3.5). Huge bats, very powerful, they are Grade 2 willow (though I think in some shops they say Grade 1 at least on their websites). Your other options for off the shelf bats at the Maverick Colossus and Powerbow extreme from GN. They are both considerably cheaper than the Oblivions, though I think they tend to be 3lb ish or above, though when I asked around the Oblivion were usually the biggest (including the two I got).

Another option would be the Kookaburra Ultra Menace which I think would fit in that weight range are are not very expensive either. I think the new Dynadrive's also go as high as 3lb (not sure on the pricing). So a few options there apart from having one custom made. If you want Indian bats, I think the Big Ton 47 from SS goes over 3lb so that might be an option (ie they should easily have pieces around 2.12 or more). I think the SG T-20 style bats may also be around that range (Stud T-20 and T-45).

Why not buy another CA? I've got a Plus Extra Power and they make them 3lb 2oz. Mine is 2lb 9oz and has a great middle for what is a lower grade bat from CA.

Ended up taking the hit and buying a 2'13 blankbat - shaped to the M&H Amplus.

Fingers crossed! :D

Good call, you won't be disappointed with blankbats.
