Title: Bat Finish
Post by: EaglesCC on October 03, 2013, 02:12:45 PM
I'm sure this would have been discussed before but I seem to be having problems with the search function (no, the problem is that I don't know how to use it! lol)

I have a new bat from which I removed the stickers (just because I didn't like them). This meant having to give it a light sand to get rid of any sticky residue left behind but what I want to know is how would I get the finish back to how it was before? Do bat makers use any sort of light wax to give it that smooth finish/ feel/ look?

I think Salix do a bat wax.

Lord Sheraton Wood Balsalm apparently does the trick! I know Wilkie uses it, and his bats look really nicely finished after he refurbs, and I think Jake from Vitas also recommends it. Haven't used it myself, but I'm sure it's better than Salix bat wax. That being said, bat wax does give a good finish too!

I recommend Lord Sheraton Wood Balsalm as Chad said. It is easily workable (consistency of butter) and after rubbing it in you can turn round immediately and buff it to a beautiful shine without having to wait like i believe you do with bat wax.

Just googled it as I'm after some bat wax for my refurb. Is it the caretaker polish or have I found the wrong one?

This gives a good finish and quite cheap.

You'd need the "light" version.

Thanks guys. I will try which ever is available locally. Is it ok to apply stickers/ anti scuff over this or should this only be applied where no stickers are going to be (I.e. Apply stickers first)....?

As long as it's been buffed and left to completely dry it doesn't matter.

Applied a sparing coat of LS wood balsam... How long do I need to wait before I am apply sticker/ anti scuff? Also noticed it contains linseed so assuming no need for oiling? Or is that a silly question? Haha
