Title: My new DS custom
Post by: SOULMAN1012 on October 14, 2013, 05:47:15 PM
Evening guys, write I know a few of you will be getting sick of me posting pics of new willow so this is the last one I plan on putting up for a while :-[

So I have seen a few nice bats coming out from Somerset and really liked the look of the work Dom was producing so contacted him about a G1 offering. Dom was really accommodating and sent me across some pics of clefts. All of which looked very nice and blemish free. I needed a cleft that would finish at my ideal weight of 2.8. Dom again sent me pics of 4 grade 1 clefts that would finish at that weight. I picked this beauty.

My requirements were quite simple in that I wanted a full spine and no concaving at all or as little as was possible to get to my weight. Apart from that I gave Dom some freedom as he had expressed in previous threads he enjoys coming up with his own unique take on things.

The bat has been fully knocked in and has been oiled and had clear anti scuff applied. I really like that the bat also came supplied with a thick spiral grip as that is my preferred choice. The bat has 32mm edges and a slight bow in the blade. The bat has 7 dead straight grains on a perfectly clean blade and these run straight through a slightly feathered toe. Pick up is excellent even though the bat is quite light anyway.

I think that the profile has a lot in common with the Newbery thruxton which is a bat I already own and really like and also a profile I think offers a long, large middle with a mid blade middle and with the full spine gives some strength to the toe as well. Anyone looking for a G1 custome offering could do a lot worse than contact Dom and for. £135 for a G1 I feel offers great value for money.

Lovely bat!

This is great new because it means mine is in the final stages. I got some pics of it but I won't hijack your thread

You've certainly got wood mate! How manys that now?

Looks at beauty, is it the photos or is the toe pretty thick? Any dimensions to accompany the weight?

I'm using mine in the nets tonight.... Can't wait.

Looks like another top bat from Dom. My toe is nice and thick so wouldn't be surprised if this is similar

26 now mate

The edges are 32 mm and spine isn't much higher to be honest maybe 40mm or just over. Yea the toe is pretty thick and being an opening bat that's a good thing from my point of view, playing out that new ball and the odd mis times drive etc.

What's the finishing like, how does it compare to say, a Salix?

This bat does look lovely! I keep staring at it.

I went for a one that had a few more grains on it however there is a small imperfection on the face so it has been branded a grade 2, I have not seen the face yet, but if your bat is anything to go by I cannot wait!

Not quite as good but I do not imagine that Dom has the equipment that is available to Salix and also Dom will not have the experience that Andrew and Ben as well I imagine have. Saying that the quality is a lot better than I find on most large mass produced brands.

I thought I would share pictures of my DS bat being made. It is in it's final stages just being oiled and knocked in.

It was originally supposed to be a G1 - however there was an imperfection on the face which makes it a grade 2 technically. Still £135 is not bad.

What I requested was a 2.10 with a long low middle.

Grain groupies will be all over that mate. Had a little knock up with mine last night, felt lovely. Indoor tonight so will report further afterwards :) see how it stands up to those ridiculous hockey ball things they use at Headingley.

Thanks Buddy!

The grains are lovely, a little disappointed with the imperfection.I am hoping the stickers will cover it, lol

Look forward to your thoughts after your indoor match.

I wouldn't be worried about the imperfection lad. People are way too hung up on aesthetics!! It's a natural, living material when growing. Were not all Herculean in appearance, well, maybe I am  ;) but its only the same principle... Nobodies perfect but everyone offers something special.

Feeling all philosophical today.. awww

It will play fine, you'll like it, end of  :)

I am 100% sure it will be fine. Just me being a tart!

I do find it intriguing the way batmakers imagination's work. The two bats I am having designed all follow the same principle of a long low middle but both look completely different to on another. It is pretty cool. When I go get my third I will ask for the same and will be interested in how that will shape up! RPC will be next!!

The imperfection isn't in the playing area though, and it gives the bat a bit more life. I think it looks beautiful! You'll have no problem middling it with that profile, that's for sure! ;)

I never thought to do anything like that. Very good project mate.

Well, I know someone who could sort all that out when you get round to wanting one ha hav

Lovely piece of willow, how's the ping?

Not tapped it up yet mate, I believe from others that have a DS this should ping well, I will update once I have had a few throw downs.

Had a quick half hour net earlier with a friend of mine that works at a local school. Spent about 30 minutes against the bowla machine at a gentle 55mph and the bat plays really well. Very long middle and nice ping already. Will need a bit more time to get match ready but early impressions are very good.

I love the shape ! It must have a super low-middle.

No the middle is mid placed and is very long due to the profile.

Used this for about an hour this evening and is opening up so well. The middle is excellent and a few o the guys at nets this evening were very impressed. I also really want to point out that the pick up on this bat really is exceptional and as good as anything in my collection. Really pleased with Dom's work.
