How lucky was I to learn my cricket under this guy as captain for a season. Learnt a lot from him. A tough uncompromising figure but he looked after you if you worked hard. Just saw this on laver and woods Facebook page. I played with him at the end of his career and he was still unbelievable and took the Micky out of fielders with his running between the wickets and had us as fit as anything. We never had a day off, he said it would be 2 hours intensive quality practice or all day if it wasn't still keep in touch with him too bloke.

I've heard a few things about Dean Jones...one being the bed sheet game, did he ever do that one?
-
I've never really seen much of him but he looks a very good player - powerful hitter either side of the wicket. Some of the pickups over midwicket were effortless.
The main thing I feel from seeing that video is how much I miss Tony Greig's commentary :-(
-
One of the reasons I love cricket, he was my first hero! The story of his famous innings in India is amazing!

Bed sheet game?? Google isn't telling me anything about this!

Yes great story. I batted out at the oval with dominic cork and I had bust my wrist lasted for over an hour corky batted awesum and I got peppered by Chris Lewis from around the wicket as I couldn't defend myself got pinned more times than I care to remember broke two helmets and I scored 4 runs and that was over the keeper off the top of my bat handle we drew the match. Deano said stuff all to me I travelled home with the coach and he didn't say stuff all as far as we'll done and I was feeling quite proud of myself and was thinking over a period of a few days that they could have said well done that takes some guts or something along those lines. But no. I then heard the story of dean jones putting himself in intensive care because Alan border had told him basically that he was weak for wanting to go off the field as he was vomiting and had dehydration. I suddenly realised that I was now playing a tough sport with a tough character and it sort of put my little knock into perspective.
I should have been out for 6 weeks but we had a ruck of bowlers injured. I hadn't been allowed to put my wrist in a pot just a brace and it was my bowling arm, so it was set in a backward position in this brace and I was told I was going to have to play in the one dayer. But my wrists bust skip, so what your playing. I opened up and bowled at the death. I got panned everywhere as it was floating out more than normal and then I got a bollocking for bowling (No Swearing Please). He was right I did but I felt I had an excuse but that didn't matter. Tough man but if you put yourself on the line he looked after you.

Thanks for that Paul. I'd forgotten just how good he was.

Aussies had a few tough men in that era.. Jones, Border, S.Waugh.... Jones was great to watch.
Boony was another tough man.. they say he had an extremely high pain threshold
-
And an extremely high alcohol threshold?

Maybe that helped the pain threshold ;)

It was character building. The great thing with Deano was that he treated you like men. If you trained hard and played hard he would say that you could go out for a beer do what you wanted as he liked a beer but if you weren't able to do you job the next day then there would be trouble. It was your responsibility for your own actions. Others after wanted to put curfews on you tell you what you could and couldn't do which was treating them as children especially disliked as the person putting these rules down would be out drinking till all hours in certain places. One rule for one and one for the other.

If you think the wrist was a tough time our coach was Deanos side kick les stillman, we were playing against NOTTS at Trent bridge championship match it was the Saturday and in the days of Sunday league so you finished the championship on the Monday, Well it was going to be a tough day as I knew at some point during that day I would have the phone call as my father had been ill and was going to pass away so I told the coach and Deano and left my phone with them. We nearly bowled NOTTS out but Paul pollard batted well and won the game for them Deano bowled me hard that day and I bowled well with not much luck, I remember it like it was yesterday strangely. Anyway we lost about lunchtime just as I got in the changing rooms my phone went and off home I rushed. That evening I phoned les up and the conversation went like this
Myself. Les it's Aldo here just to let you know that I won't be available tomorrow as I need to be with the family, obviously a bit of a tough time for everyone.
Coach. Well that's your decision mate it will be hard to get back in the team as you have been playing well recently.
Myself. Well I appreciate that les but the obviously it's a tough time for my mum so I need to be home.
Coach. Well that's your decision let me know when your back in.

Fantastic cricketer and now just as good a commentator on some of the overseas sports channels.

Yes Deano knows his stuff and I like the fact he says what he thinks people get a bit miffed now days if people speak honestly.

Any thoughts on how it all ended at Derbyshire? I find this article on the topic, sounds like a lot of guesswork!:-

Well how long have you got. The previous year Deano took the club to second in the championship when it was one division and we had a chance of winning it but blew it at Somerset. Deano was a hard man who did it his way. As a young player on the staff then, I think other senior players may have felt as though they were being pushed out the way and maybe that the success the previous year had shown up a lot of things that should have been done over the years before as Derbyshire had really been underachievers with the quality of players that they had had over the years. It was quite noticeable in the clubs history that any player in the changing room that had become a senior figure and probably was felt would threaten leadership positions had suddenly left the county be it by choice or the decision made for them so to speak. Look at the top county players and international players that have been and gone over the period of late 80s through to early 90s.
As certain parties started to turn on Deano his so called friend les stillman started to edge his bets from what I saw and then went onto look after his own back. That didn't do him any favours as non of the players then Wanted him around as they wouldn't trust him. What followed at the club was another few years of mediocrity until certain individuals were then finally sorted by the club once the committee had built up the guts to put their foot down. Until they did this nothing was going to change their but since about 2004 the club has been able to rebuild and start to have some success. They may have gone back down to div 2 this year after promotion but at least Karl krikken is giving the young lads a go and their are no stars in the team that has to have a roadshow built around them.
It's a shame Deano went as I heard a strong rumor that we had mark Taylor lined up to take over from him, what a great signing that would have been to have him at the end of his career

Sounds like Jones going was the worst thing that happened!
-
Well Chris Adams prospered under him without a doubt
-
One of my favorite Australian players.
Still have memories of 91/92 benson and hedges cup
He never failed to score runs and that too in style. Mr consistent and a big hitter

Bed sheet game?? Google isn't telling me anything about this!
Without going into specifics it involves a team, a bed sheet and some guests. It might just be an urban legend though.
-
Afraid those stories will always remain legends. ;)

A nod is as good as a wink. ;)
Read you loud and clear!
