Is this one of yours, mate? If so, have you noticed any change in the way the bat sounds?
-
It is. I don't have it back yet. Should get it by the end of the week I hope. You can have a hit when we do a net session but it is going to be on the light side. I have another Thruxton coming in which will be closer to your weight. That should be here this week as well. The Argon is due any day. We should def do a net session this week. Especially as I'll be fielding all day on Sat.

Is this a new line that Salix will use in 2014

No its just a Pod Players with the TAs inserts retrofitted. It weighed less than 2lb 6 without the inserts so should be about 2lb 9 now.

Looking forward to your feedback Shane!

The latest arrivals.
Pod Players with TAS inserts. 2lb 8.34oz. Weight prior to inserts was 2lb 6oz. It will get its first hit out this week.
Thruxton Players 2lb 10.3. Sensational. I have used it in one net session and the ball just flies. Unlike my Thruxton SPS there is no jarring sensation. It just feels sweet. The SPS hammers the ball as well but it feels a little harder than the Players. The SPS is only 2lb 9oz and is much smaller then the Players. Smaller edges and a smaller spine. The SPS is still my match bat though.
Argon Original LE 2lb 9.7oz. This is a big bat. Huge edges. Not much concaving. The handle is very thin which makes the bat feel bigger - like having a toothpick attached to a tree trunk.

How much did it cost to get these retrofitted and who did it? Seems like a good way to strengthen the bat and add some weight.
I have a Slazenger V360 that only weighs 2.6 and I like 2.8 so could use these to get the weight up to the required amount.

I paid $110. But I also had the face sanded back as some of the willow had lifted when I removed the extratec. The face of the salix seems very fragile. Even when I put the new extratec on there was some lifting of the willow when I repositioned the extratec. I have never had a bat behave this badly.

Too dry maybe??

I don't know. It had been oiled a few days before applying the extratec so I wouldn't think so. I'll just have to be careful with it.
Gave it a solid workout today. At 2.8 it still feels too light but there is sufficient weight in the bat now to generate some good pace on the ball. The sweetspot feels huge. Chopping and changing between the Salix and Thruxton Players I could really feel the difference. The best way I can describe it is by talking about tennis racquets (an industry where advances in technology are embraced).
The tennis racquets designed for bad players are the ones that are bristling with technology - because these players need all the help they can get. These racquets are designed to have a massive massive sweetspot. The racquet engineers achieve increases in sweetspot size by increasing stability (torsional and recoil). Torque/twist = lost energy therefore an absence of torque/twist = more energy transfer = larger sweetspot.
The downside of a large sweetspot is that you lose feel for the ball. You become isolated from the impact. Without feel you sacrifice control. Which is why racquets designed for good players have relatively small sweetspots.
The Salix with the inserts feels like a racquet that a bad player would use. It is all sweetspot. With the Thruxton you feel more connected to the ball. You can still hammer the ball but when you don't get it just right the bat lets you know about it. When you don't hit it dead centre with the Salix it still feels like a sweetspot impact.

So is it a good thing to oil on the edges with TAS or should that be avoided like they say to avoid near the splice area ??
-
Oh bugger. Maybe a better question would be who could do this in the UK?

Pretty sure it's patented so you won't find anyone else doing this legally out in the open...
-
they are £70 on sports direct - cheaper than getting it done and postage - just buy a new bat.
I still am not sure of the benefits and don't understand how it changes how the middle of the bat. On the Salix example above, it may just be that the bat is rather good!
I would like to try one to see - but until then I may be in the doubting Thomas camp.
-
On paper, it would make sense that this widens and lengthens (to an extent) the sweetspot. I feel that what Buzz said could play a part in why you feel the bat is so responsive though... (Salix are worldclass batmakers) I would find it very difficult to do something like this to such a work of artwork myself, but I see the benefits if you feel the bat is too light.
-
They claim it's sprung so that in itself helps performance towards the edges. However I'm a not convinced how such a narrow strip of wood jammed a relatively small distance into the edges will have such a big effect.
What's most likely happening is that there is more weight towards the edges with the inserts added which increases stability on off centre impacts. This is similar to how golf clubs and tennis racquets use "perimeter weighing systems" to achieve a similar effect.

Mmmm.... yeah it is a very good bat. But so are the rest. Sometimes I have to allow extra time to get to the nets because I know that choosing which bat I'm using that day is going to be tough.

No problems giving the edges with TAS inserts a light oil.
