Title: That one bowler you WOULDN'T face...
Post by: billyb on November 23, 2013, 04:53:37 PM
We all have that one bowler on the international circuit who absolutely terrifies you, gives you sleepless nights and you fear may well murder you given half the chance.

For me, Dale Steyn is that guy. The man has no soul, he gives me nightmares which I could probably seek counselling for.

Then again, that is probably why I play club cricket and not international cricket. (apart from the obvious).

Who is your nightmare?

Same.

That guys has everything and I'd certainly not be seen on the same wicket as him. I'd just refuse

Steyn would be tough but I'd have worse nightmares about Morkel.  At least at Steyn's height the short one has to be proper short, where as Morkel can get it up nastily from just back of a length.

i think Johnson if he is bowling like he currently is, slingy action would be hard to pick up too

I played a second eleven game against tymal mills at Essex and although he isnt really "on the international stage" the lad has serious serious pace!!

Wouldnt fancy facing Tait on a juicy one either... if he doesnt know where its going how is the batsman supposed to!

I faced Luke Wright in a county 2nd XI game... He was clocking close to 90mph and because he is short, it is horrible!

Marchant de Lange for me.

Bowls 150-155kph. But unlike Morne Morkel, who bowls to short, de Lange bowls fuller and gets alarming bounce.

I've kept wicket to both of them and Mills would definitely be my choice

Warne as he would make me look like a muppet,

a fella at our club 2seasons ago was at Durham for a while and I netted with him just before he was going to be viewed by the coaches there to decide of they wanted to keep him, he was bowling avg 85mph and that was serious brown pants time, a great experience but serious pace and he wasn't the tallest so everything was waist to rib cage height.

Funny but when I kept to him it never seemed to bad from my point of view but that was the only time I faced him bowling full pace, he was even chirping me to get himself going,

Jo Doors was Rapid come to think about it when I faced him about 11-12 years ago, a little nasty with it as well from memory, probably my fault for chirping him as a mouthy cocky teen lol

Lopsy Tsotsobe. In a recent ODI against the Netherlands he was bowling well over 150kph in the nets.

Also I heard the bloke who was running them around and looking after the teams kit saying that he needed the biggest abdo guard he'd ever seen.

Malinga. Don't fancy 85mph 'slingers' and can mix it up with the short ball and very fast, accurate yorkers.

When did you play against him? He was at Bickley with me for a while. I remember going down to St Lawrence after a week of 30 degrees to find a wet, slow, low green one!!!!

Malinger as I would hate another broken toe caused by an inswinging Yorker.
Or Steyn as he is the best bowler for a reason!
Also would have hated to face Warne as I wouldn't have had a Scooby how to play him!

any of the west indies bowlers from the 80's. They could put it on a good length and make it bounce at your chest. Self preservation for me.

Did this chap move up North to Warks by any chance?

Was a fair few seasons ago, about 2003 or so I would have thought. May have even been against Bickley Park to be honest.

It would be Harmison for me. Devastating pace and bounce coupled with the fact he blatantly has no idea of he's going to bowl you a toe-crushing Yorker or a throat ball.

Devon Malcolm I guess would be another. Rumour has it the first time Malcolm netted at Derbyshire Kim Barnett was left pretty shaken up. Malcolm's first delivery flew past Barnett's nose... It was a full toss... And Barnett was actually in the second net facing the spinners at the time!

I've always found it unsettling facing quick bowlers with no control, feels like an extra level of danger is introduced

Waqar Younis for me! probably end up walking with a slight hobble after being struck with those vicious in-swinging yorkers of his in his prime!!

Must have been off 15 yards! When he was over at Essex he was bowling under 80mph so unless he's put on some serious pace in the past year or so

Sounds like an advert for Andre van Troost!

Jermaine Lawson and harshal Patel play in our league on Saturday. And on the same team. They are freakin fast!!! And that's without spikes, regular runup etc. I can't even imagine playing Styen, Morkel etc. As someone said, hit the wickets, come back and watch the show :D

A good few years ago, Ian Bishop played for Reigate Priory. We were is the same league and I was still opening the batting that year.   We had a big downpour the night before the game and (un)fortunately the track was soaked in the midlle where water got under the cover.  The umpires deemed the track too dangerous to play on so the game was abandoned before play started.

Admittedly, Bishop wasn't the same after his back injury, and part of me was disappointed not to be able to face him, but the other part of me (and the rest of the team)were quite relieved !

Looking back at it, it was the opportunity to face someone that I would have watched terrorise batsmen on TV and I got robbed of the chance to face him. At the time, I was pooing it !

Just had a quick read up on this guy as never heard his name mentioned before. He sounds like he could get the ball down the other end!

Rumours of bowling over 100mph consistently?

Malinga would be horrific to face because of his action/pace/accuracy

Out of all of them, I'd hate to face Mitch Johnson. Bowls 90mph and even he's not sure where it's going the rest of the time. Most of these bowlers named you have a rough idea of where it's going to be.

Give me Steyn over Johnson

I don't think it was consistent in either length or line! He was a bit all over the place but very quick for a few years.
