Asked John a while back if he could sort me a middling bat at 2'8 - 2'9 as the off the shelf stuff is normally way too light to be of any use in terms of replicating a match bat, and they are Kashmir too making them unsatisfying to use.
Wasn't bothered by looks or performance (as long as it wasn't a total plank) too much, as long as felt similar to my match bats when using it. Obviously this meant using a heavy cleft and leaving plenty of meat in the edge and spine. The cleft in question does have some staining, red wood and some imperfections, but i'm pretty chuffed with the the bit of wood i've got. 9 even, straight grains, rifle straight through the toe, on a middling bat!? I almost feel a little dissapointed that i didn't get a real bat made up from this cleft.

The other thing to mention is the finish and sheen on my bat is exemplary. I didn't really expect a practice bat to be finished to the same standards as the numerous Red Inks that have passed through my hands in recent months, so I'm very happy this evening. :)

That looks one chunky piece of wood!

That looks very good mate. Like you said not many good choices off the shelf for middling bats, on the odd occasions I use a stump but doesn't feel great through the hands. How much was it Jake of you don't mind me asking?

Good to see it arrived ok despite the couriers best efforts to ruin the contents of the box.
Enjoy using it mate and thanks for the feedback. I've worked hard on the finish on every bat I make. Doesn't matter what grade or price someone pays, they all get the same treatment

Could you get them made to weight specs? i am very interested in one now i have seen this one, i have picked up middling bats in the past and it just can replicate picking up the bats, what a great idea Rob.

Nice one.
First pic makes it look like an uber long 5 foot blade :D

£45 is outrageously good!! If I was still playing I'd be extremely tempted

They are made to the weight you request. No point using one that isn't the same weight as your match bat.

John did me a middling bat at 2.11 a few months ago. It's a lovely piece of wood, it really is. Red Ink certainly finish a bat of lovely. and as for the price, well, can't be beat in my opinion. I told john what bat I use, and he made one to emulate the balance and pick up as best as possible, so really, considering you will have it custom made, he price point is even better. Can't wait to actually get in the nets with it at the start of next year (currently giving it a bit of a knock in)

Out of interest, have people found using one has helped them?
Quite a bargain that john does on these!

Yes it helped me using a middling bat. Spent a good deal of time away from cricket so using one really showed up my batting deficiencies. Even used a stump which after a while I was hitting straight back to he bowling machine (tens balls), certainly helped me understand my alignment issues without the need for another person watching and giving me feedback.
Bradman is famed for using a stump and golf ball when he was a kid.
