Title: What do you want in a bat if it's 400 sheets
Post by: procricket on December 14, 2013, 03:49:57 PM
Keeping it off people topics and all what do you want if your paying top wack.

Yes I know some will not pay that much but if you did what do you want.

Me I want the selection of the best clefts the lightest and the better looking I want to watch it being made I want to design my shape and I want exactly what I ask for.

Most I have ever paid for a single bat is £395 quid I got what I wanted but with the current priced bats and genuine lack of quality clefts apparently is there a real market a bigger market for cheaper stand alone brands and Indian imports.

I understand for real brands there overheads and such but what makes people seriously pay 400 quid for a off the shelf bat

Is expect a selection of clefts and the ability for it to be customised to my profile/shape preference (within reason).

The bat "experience" my wife bought me from Salix was exactly that and think it came in around £380. I personally wouldn't pay that sort of money for something off the shelf

Let's be honest in the old days it was the potentially pressed by a certain place in Sussex added the wow factor for people and another 50 quid on the price tag but people should have got wise

For 400 id want a few things

Clean clean clean blade.
AtLeast ten straight grains
Great rebound
Great pick up
Chose of handle
Great looking branding, and id want it from a brand that is known and trusted
12months warranty
Protective Bat cover
Knocked in.

Optional:
Toe guard
Scuffle sheet

The profile is a strange one, you could design it yourself but it may pick up awful.
So id expect a brand to have a variety of profiles that pick up great and are proven with some r and d, to choose from

Last and not least id expect it to come with great customer service

Id want two bats for that much haha!!

In all seriousness, id want a bat that would last me at least 3000 runs, have a 2 year warranty, be exceptionally light but big and have a trampoline middle all the way from top to bottom.  That being said, i don't think a bat is worth £400

I would rather have a £150 bat and £250 of coaching.

I think it comes back to who you are marketing to. There are 100 times now people who play cricket, than who are members of this forum, in the UK... This means that there is a lot of money out there that will spend it on what they can afford. I'd people think that they are getting the best that money can buy, off the shelf, for that price, there are plenty that will pay it. We just know a bit more. I'd therefore want something like the salix experience for that kind of cash...

I see bats like shopping at Waitrose. You pay a bit more for the quality of the product, but you really pay for the customer service associated with that product.

If I ever paid £400 for a cricket bat... (A lovely thought!) I would want them to offer full bat customisation options (Handle, Grains, Profile, Weight etc - Discussion with bat maker), full hand preparation service, full refurbish service for the life of the bat and a no quibble guarantee that if that bat breaks within the first year (From general wear), it is repaired/replaced within 14 days.

A lot of big companies have been influenced by cheaper Indian brands in terms of quality and ability to turn out cheap bats, hitting profit margins, so has been a bigger drive towards efficiency - They really should concentrate on customer service. I think that's how companies such as Salix, Newbery, M&H have achieved what they have. I use John @ Red Ink and the reason I will buy more from him is the quality of his customer service - though the bats easily rival the ones I used to get from my Newbery sponsorship.

Got to add when I got my most expensive bat I got taken out for lunch but I never got a free mug or bat cover.  Agree massively with customer care and I would predict this forum represents less than 1 per cent

Performance.

It should be the best bat I ever had and shouldn't need to try to whack it, it should just "go".

IF I were to ever pay £400 fora. Bat it would have to be perfect. Perfect weight, perfect handle, millions of grains, go like a rocket all over the bat and have warranty to protect it. I doubt any bat is actually worth that though tbh.

It's all relative. If you can afford it, why not?

Where I work, I was speaking to a Customer Service Advisor (on a CSA type wage) who wears a £1000 watch. I wear a £4 one. Does the same job.

I think a bat is there for performance and show. At the end of the day, why pay £250 when you can get one half that price?

Same with cars, why buy an audi/vw when a skoda/seat does the exact same thing.

His watch cost more than my car! (Dunno if that tells you more about him or me really)

With bats (like anything else I suppose) things are only worth what you're willing to pay for them.
Have I spent over £200 on a bat - yes
Would I spend that much again - probably not but never say never
Would I even consider a £400 bat - I'd book myself in for psychiatric help
Is my £10 watch too cheap - no, £1000 on a watch is mental in my option
And finally, do I need a more expensive car - probably but mine does the job (for now)

all these statements were true at the time I posted, if I win the lottery or something this is subject to change

If I was shelling out £400 its all about one thing - performance.
I have had many super looking bats with 20 odd straight grains but they might be very heavy / dense or really hard pressed. Some might be massive for their weight but the ball just doesn't come off it.
My current match bat is an OK looking bat, nothing massive for 2.9, but you only have to touch the ball and it rockets away. Having bought many bats during the years you don't find that many bats that really fly.
I would happily pay £400 if the bat was guaranteed to perform like that.

Says the guy who purchased a Hawk Players! ;) I think you just insulted around 75% of the forum population! :P

If I were to spend £400 on a bat, I guess 10-12 arrow straight grains, all sapwood and plays really nicely. I already have my Laver which I love though, and if I were to buy a £400 bat, it would have to be the same shape and outperform that, but also feel just as good in the hands, and when connecting with the ball. :)

What do I want in a £400 bat, is the question.

My answer is ...

Someone else on here to buy it, then I have a good chance of picking it up for around half that in 6-18 months.

Interesting that watches and cars have come up in this thread because the percentage increase in price from entry level to top end in each of these products is miles and miles higher than cricket bats, yet a lot of people will always get the top end watches and cars, so applying the same logic, a lot of people will always buy £400 cricket bats...  Let's be honest, cricket is not exactly a working class sport too...

I've managed to only spend over 200 once and it was the worst bat I've owned ( owned 8)

I don't think I could ever justify £400 on a bat. £200 I think is more than enough for a decent stick.
