Title: Hampshire Thread
Post by: Mtown Don on December 17, 2013, 01:50:37 PM
Just following on from a few posts in other topics it seems there are some Hampshire fans on the board and they are currently a very interesting county so thought they deserved a thread.

Being a student at Southampton, I saw a lot of them last year and hope to do the same next season. Obviously they had a very successful limited overs season based on a formulaic game plan but they really disappointed in the championship despite being preseason favourites. How can they turn this around next year (particularly after the loss of McKenzie and Mascarenhas)? Will Adams continue as skipper or has Will Smith been brought in with captaincy in mind? Can the likes of Vince, Dawson, Wheater, Wood and Briggs kick on with big seasons?

I think they will generally line up as:

Carberry (when available)
Adams *
Dawson
Vince
Ervine
Smith
Wheater +
Coles (should be an important signing)
Briggs
Tomlinson (Wood in OD/t20)
An overseas seamer

I think they will struggle to replicate their short game form - their game will be less suited to 50 overs - but can improve in the LVCC. They will need to start bowling sides out at home (particularly preventing the tail from wagging) and the batsmen should look to play more positively to allow more time for this. Adams (if he stays on) could also be more creative with his captaincy at times I feel.

Anyway, sorry to ramble but would appreciate your thoughts

It's been confirmed that Adams will stay in as captain but they didn't state if he would take over the T20 role as well. Personally I would have l liked him to take the two limited over competitions and someone else to take the county championship.

Our overseas player will be interesting. I think Bransgrove said recently the club were talking to 3 seamers currently. An Australian would be best as their season is pretty much clear while we play.

I think you've more or less got the line up there with a few changes to the batting order. I think Vince will start at 3 and Dawson and Ervine will drop down to 5 and 6. Ervines got to start performing this season as he began to tail off in the latter half of last season I think.

Coles also has quite a poor record economy rate in OD and T20 cricket!

Thanks for that mate, all very interesting and a few things of which I wasn't aware.

Jimmy will really need to step up his consistency in the championship to compensate for the relatively inexperienced middle order, especially in the absence of Mackenzie and possibly Carbs.

Briggs and Vince have a lot to prove next season. Briggs needs to start impacting championship matches and it will be interesting to see if they will show more faith in him with more overs in the first innings. You get the feeling that everyone is just waiting for Vince to fulfill his talent with some consistency; if he can achieve that then I think he may be afforded an opportunity in the ODI team and kick on from there.

Not surprised by Coles; he comes across as someone who could over attack with short balls and get some tap in one day stuff but Hampshire might need that aggression at the top. 50 overs will make their containing gameplay less effective so they will need the overseas to be a genuine strike bowler (thinking Tanvir at his best last year)

Will definitely be a big season for them anyway and could easily go either way

Tell you what, imagine if we could get Johnson  :D. I don't think he'd be that keen to come over but if he did in the form he's currently in he'd rip through county sides like mad! We do seem to have a lot of links within the Australian set up due to Warne,Watson etc.

Don't forget the likes of Katich, Clarke & Maxwell!
We've been lucky with our overseas players really.

Yeh, I've got a big feeling that we'll go for an Aussie again but not sure who. I heard rumours about Faulkner but not sure how reliable they are.

And I forgot Bailey! He might put a good word in about us haha

Finch for T20 maybe? He didn't seem to mind our ground that much ;). Although I think we'll struggle to find anyone decent for T20 with it being spread throughout the season now. Step in the wrong direction from the ECB in my opinion.

I can see Ervine becoming more of a one day player, especially if he has a poor start to the season.  Perhaps Sean Terry coming into the side more?

I think the same for Ervine, was a bit confused last season as the season before he started bowling a lot more but didn't seem to bowl nearly at all last season! Still no coach though for the new season it seems!

Dawson really did impress me with the amount he has come on recently last season and as to how well he cemented his place in the team. I assume he will open for us in first class cricket next season if Carberry is absent at all.

Will be interesting to see how the likes of briggs (needs to improve his bowling in CC) and Vince get on. From what I saw of him Vince actually looked a half decent bowler towards the end of last season and was getting a bit more pace on the ball than I'd have expected. I noticed BBC called him 'Hampshire allrounder James Vince...' in an article they did a short time ago which I found quite funny  :D.

Vince's batting has something Vaughan esque about it. Really hope he makes the most of his talent going forward.

Just confirmed the signing of Joe Gatting. Should be decent batting cover

Personally I'm a little underwhelmed by the signing of Gatting, after initially impressing he tailed away badly.  Hopefully he finds us more to his liking.

There was some speculation that we'd end up with Chris Adams so if thats the case I'd rather stick with White  ;)  He has to improve the CC form though or he may have to go.

We've signed Kyle Abbott a South African seamer who took 9 wickets in his test debut and hasn't played a test since, can't wait to see him in action!

He was playing in the WEPL Bristol and Somerset 4 or 5 years ago for clevedon. He has done well for himself.

With the Tie-in that Hampshire have with Cricket Australia I presume they will simply pick the best performing player as they did with Maxwell last year and have him play where available

We had George Bailey last year mate, Maxwell was doing well in the Premier League when Hampshire signed him a couple of years ago. (And I think Maxwall was at Surrey last year)

I thought it seemed a while ago Maxwell was at south wilts! That explains it

Could be a bit short of bowlers for the first CC game. Abbot is going to miss it, Wood is out recovering from an operation and there's a chance if England manage to reach the T20 world cup semis (Unlikely I know :P) then Briggs may also be unavailable. That would mean a bowling line up looking like :

Tomlinson
Coles
Balcombe
Taylor/Other?Braithwaite?(And rely on dawson as a spinner?)

+Ervine
+Dawson

Interesting news about Benkenstein.  I didn't realise White was taking a step back, I assumed that talk of a new coach was to replace him.  Could be a good move, I'll be interested to see how we go at the start of the season.  Hopefully he can help Vince find some red ball consistency.

Agree there, he played with Smith and has been coach at the same SA team as Abbott so should already be familiar with some of the team and was quite a class player so hopefully he can perform as well as coach  :).

As a DCCC fan i was gutted to hear these rumours of the last few weeks were confirmed today, i think before Colly taking over the captaincy and Geoff Cooks heart attack last year, the plan was for Cook to step down then Benks to move onto first team coach but obviously wasnt to be! Wish him look though great guy.
