Hi,
Iv got an Ayrtex helmet with titanium grill and the mounting plate has come away from the grill.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Is this a know design fault? As to me the area where it is welded to the grill bars should have been flattened to give more surface area to weld too also does not looked to be Alined properly as it was pulling on the mounting bracket causing it to be strained.
I'm sure quality control checks would have picked this up?

I have had an in depth discussion with Jaffa about this over email as I presume you were the person on eBay who sold him the helmet?. Breakage rate is a very low % on the grills be it in titanium or steel. The area where the welds are placed is countersunk to provide a better surface area and recess to weld onto, this was suggested by the CAD company at the design stage to strengthen the area.
QC upon the product and its welds is put in place before the grills leave the factory but its obviously not possible to stress test every one without damaging the product before its fitted to the helmet. They need to be under some element of stress when fitted to the helmet in order to provide structural rigidity upon impact.
We have spend thousands of pounds testing the helmets and the latest research carried out at L'boro sports research lab showed that even after 4 impacts from a ball at 67mph the grills stood upon their task.

I'm sure tom can come Up with a solution to replace said grill.

Smilley id be happy if tom came up with a solution to replace the grill as the helmet itself has not seen much use. I am also well aware of all the testing they go through that's the reason I bought one as I knew they were good helmets however like you said this must be a one off

more that happy with all the testing that goes on and that's why I bought the helmet as knew they were good.
So how is it that from me boxing it up to sending it on. That the area were the welds are placed have failed and come unattached

As explained to Jaffa, I cannot control what happens to the helmet once its been put in the post via a courier company. If something has become damaged in transit then you need to take it up with the courier company not us as the manufacturer. If it was intact when you boxed it up and sent it then I cannot see how you deem Ayrtek to be at fault for the damage?

I m not trying to put the fault of the damage on to Ayrtek. however there is something not right as you have said it can with stand 4 balls at 67mph and grills were fine. but a trip in a transit they may well have dropped it however im sure it would still be intact after all it can withstand 4 balls at 67mph that's a lot of point pressure.
and I will be going to the courier with this
all I was asking on my original post that as anyone else had a problem with them as it could be a design fault

Without pictures it's impossible to tell but sounds like a welding issue.

no allegations have been made. I was merely asking forum members if they have had any problems and if they knew of any design faults that are known with these grills. I am a fan of all the Ayrtek products and have recommended them to may people that I have had the pleasure of playing with and against. I just thought that the grill would last longer than it has for the price of the helmet. The helmet has had little use
Its just a good thing that is wasn't worn at the time the welds failed

Mines did this as well, but only after I bounced it off the ground after being run out, took me a while to find someone over here who could weld titanium and fix it, but is good as new now, only had myself to blame.

I have 2 and neither has done this!
I also know a couple of others who have had Ayrtek helmets for quite a while and no worries there!!

My lid is fine and that's even had a fair bit of abuse against changing room walls whilst throwing a tantrum after getting out.

As someome else with no ill effects on an Ayrtek grill from transporting it around the country in a duffle, I'd suggest that the assertion that this is a design fault is well and truly wrong, and that the worst case is there may have been a manufacturing error on this particular grill, which allied with poor handling by the courier, resulted in damage.
Given the nature of the complaint, I'd suggest the courier is at fault, and this should probably be left there, with Andy pursuing the courier.

the courier are not prepared to do anything as you left it so long to report to me that it had been damaged. They also suggested that due to the time you have had it you could have damaged it while in your possession. so we stand no chance of getting anything from them so look like we a stuck with a bit of a predicament to sort out.

With due respect to both parties, if I read correctly, this was an ebay transaction. Shouldn't you be carrying out this discussion via ebay resolution centre? They may be able to offer expert help but keep in mind in most cases, it goes in buyer's favour.
