Title: Big Bash League
Post by: BigBlueMachine on December 20, 2013, 08:58:13 AM
Just watching the first BBL on the year. Melbourne derby, the stars vs the renegades.

I thought Luke Wright was using the GN Nemesis in the T20s this year? He looks to be using a Powerbow. Is it a case of him not using the Nemesis as it's only available in the UK market?

Maybe the pace and bounce of aus pitches means he wants something substantial all the way up the blade?

Anyway, he's currently 47 of 21. Striking it cleanly!

Just seen they are replaying the match from this morning on sky so I guess that answers my question!

I like that the Melbourne renegades have a player called tommy cooper

Is the deal with English players the same for the big bash as it is for the IPL in that they have to give a percentage of their contract to their county?

As it doesn't run over the season I'd have thought it would be different. Match experience and training with a BBL team is probably just as good as nets if you look on it like that.

Good to see the English lads doing well in the BBL. Maybe they should be drafted into the Ashes squad?

So they did well in a hit & giggle game - must be worthy of a test match call up...

Oh a few slap and tickle runs and suddenly hey are world beaters.. It's 2020 crap, means nothing other than easy money for the players and franchises

Yes it is slap and tickle cricket, but not always that easy.

I guess these players wh arent in the  test squads need to do something during the winter.

To make the jump from 2020 to test, I agree, is a bit of a jump.

where are all the foreign stars this year?

is it merely they are in other series and will arrive late? or has something gone down, so they aren't coming?

currently its the bang oppodite off the ipl, each team has a few English men, and not much else non domestic

Not that I've watched much IPL over the years but I think the last few I've seen have more and more home based players and less overseas? Lots of older 'stars' just there for the cash. Not that I know about the standard but I doubt the IPL is that good compared to others.

I've watched every year. The standard in terms of other t20 competitions is certainly the highest.

Indians seems to take to this game well, so there is a lot of home grown stars, but every team always fills there quota of foreign players allowed in the side(I believe it's 4 out of the eleven currently)
And they are often having to rotate them as they have 6-7 foreigners in each squad.

Off the top of my head

WI- gayle, bravos, Samuels, Sammy, roach, smith
SA- kallis, steyn, morkels, duminy, petersen, de villiers, dunplesis
Aus- Faulkner, Johnston, hogde, Watson, Warner, maxwell, finch, henriques, husseys, smith
Sri Lanka- sangakarra, dilshan, kulsakerra, jaywardene, Malinga,
New Zealand- Taylor, mcullum, vettori, Rutherford

That's just off top of my head, and there's some definate world stars in there, along with a few at the end of there carreers, but can Definately cut it at t20 still.

Just about to post the same thing. I guess now it's the New Year we might see quite a few guys signing on with different manufacturers, but then again I would've thought his contract might've expired at the conclusion of the Australian summer in March?

Anyone else rate Gilly as a commentator? I think he's excellent, would do a far better job in the sky studio than Warne & Strauss. Looks at the game in an interesting way. Top bloke

Gilly's been excellent.  A lot of former pros, whilst being able to provide insight, have unbelievably annoying voices.  Sorry Strauss!  He's also a lot more likeable than Warne.

Queries for the poms,
Does hales do any good in longer form cricket?
Surely butler keeps better than or no worse than bairstow?

Couple of cracking ball strikers that look fundamentally decent, play good cricket shots.

Dont hear any thoughts thst they may get test selection? Atleast there'd be some shots played.

Not sure, but don't think they do much as kept out of longer county format by Read and Kieswetter.

I'd not worry about Bairstow too much. I don't think he is a long term replacement for Prior. I think they picked Bairstow as an extra batsman as they didn't expect to drop Prior.

Hales was dropped from Notts 4 day side so be e doesn't look good in the long form.
Butler has hardly kept for Somerset as Bedwetter does (and they let Tresco keep ahead of Butler in one game) so it's hard to compare.

Long term I'd like Hales to be given a go in the longer form as I rate him and I'd like Butler playing all forms once he's had a bit more championship experience behind the stumps.

Some big hitting this morning, finch, white and maxwell all rapid 50plus.

Some Mong in the crowd was shining a laser Pen at the batsmen though. Which is a disgrace.
It seems uneducated moronic football hooligans are spreading all over the world and to other sports,

I wonder if 20/20 cricket is going to be the next "pathway" for raw players with talent.

When you think that David Warner would not be wearing the baggy green if not for 20/20 it makes me think that players such as Hale and Wright may have a genuine future in the format that counts...

Faulkner's development is due to the ipl.

Anyone know the situation on vettori? Has he retired from NZ cricket or not selected or declined to play for NZ.
Bowling decent in this game. Class bowler

It looks like he call barely walk... but my good he can still bowl!

He is coming back from major injury and is not being considered for international selection for NZ until he is 100%, but he has not officially retired from international cricket.

He looks like he has plenty to offer if his body can hold together.  I wonder if he will get an IPL gig this year?

Playing coach?  We he be allowed to play under the IPL rules?  Does he intend to play?

Looks like the Strikers are gone.... barring a kind of Faulkneresque come back that is...

Surely he would bowl well on those Indian busun burners... small grounds though

Why isn't Luke Wright in the ODI side? He bats and bowls. Is let him open with Cook and drop bell down to 3 in place of Root. Bell and Morgan in the middle of the innings would see us past 300 in more innings than not.

To be honest I would totally agree with you.

I did read somewhere (cricinfo maybe?) that with the new rules in ODIs (two white balls) Wright was finding it difficult where the pitch was seaming around.  But I am not sure how this would be specific to him.

I think Ballance would be under pressure, however, I don't think he should be dropped this series as he needs to be given games to prove himself.  If he doesn't show enough this series then his boat may sail... and the HMS Luke Wright may be the next in the dock.
