Title: 9 piece cane handle v/s 12 piece one

Firstly, apologies if this has already been discussed or if the topic is too trivial.

I have only used a 9-piece one through out my playing days. Can someone throw light on key differences and your experiences with both these? Cause some of the good bats (and expensive as well) still have the 9-piece ones. Just wondering, is a 12-piece handle cost prohibitive or is it just upto individual bat makers.
