Hello all
I was about to pull the trigger on a new bat when I was offered a used one for free from someone in my club. Times are tight and I cheerfully accepted. :)
It turns out its a Newbery Uzi Players bat. I have seen some pics but dont have it yet, but I know the style of bat it is. Its 20 20 style with 50mm edges. I have never used one before and wont get it for a couple of weeks.
Question I have been pondering is I am quite short at 5'8" and was considering buying a heavy harrow bat. I was wondering whether it is likely to suit me with its shorter blade/longer handle style or quite the opposite? Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or even used one thats around my height? Thanks.

I'm a tall 5"8 and I've just bought an uzi, feels comfortable but haven't had a chance to net with it.
If it feels too long I may be tempted to lop 3/4 inch off the handle. Will ask the forum for advice on this before doing it though.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth mate. If offered a newbery players bat, snap their hand off. If the longer handles a problem, then use the money that you were going to spend on a new bat, in getting it re-handled!

LOL like I say I bit their hand off for it, no hesitation there. Just difficult not having handles one and having to wait to see how it feels.

Yep that sounds too radical for me, would assume it would upset the balance but what do I know. Will look out for that thread with interest.

Meant to say. I have never considered re-handling a bat, how costly is that?

Fantastic bats. The Uzi players I had was brilliant. I'm very short and high middle, short blade suited my style. Found the long handle a bit of a pain sometimes, but that because I hold the handle very low down anyway. I'd go for it, you won't regret using it. Went to Hawk a few weeks ago and they about to bring out a new bat with a shorter blade but standard short handle if you looking for that style. I'm rather tempted myself. If not I'm sure a sponsor on here would make something you want.

I think as a short batsman I would instinctively prefer a standard blade and a shorter handle rather than this option or having the choice of a heavy harrow.

Newbery will rehandle for around £40 - £50 inc postage

Thanks for the info, wont it upset the balance of the blade shortening the handle or do they somehow balance it at the same time as fitting in some mystical magical way not obvious to me?!

It doesn't have 50mm edges I don't think, I think the sticker refers to spine height

Thanks gawd for that, I'll put these weights down!

I have absolutely no idea what it will do to the balance, but I wouldn't have thought it would affect it too much! No different to having a harrow bat with a harrow length handle perhaps... honestly wouldn't know!

I've cut the top 3/4 inch off the top of all my bats, doen't affect the balance at all. The piece of cane that comes off is incredibly light.
If for some reason you do feel it is affected, just run some medical tape round the top of the handle to bulk it out again. Plus makes it look correct uder the grip!

I assumed a Harrow bat had a slightly smaller blade and shorter handle to maintain balance but dont know that for a fact.

Interesting, and brave! Did you just hacksaw it off? Is the finish neat, did it need gluing treating in anyway?
-
Pretty much! Was very careful to make sure the cut was straight, cut it off and sanded the end off a tad.
Nope, haven't treated any of them, cut it off just above the end of the binding, so there is still a little ridge, which saves the need to mess with the binding. I only did it because, as stated, if you hold the bat quite low, it does get in the way very occasionally.

Would you mind posting a picture?

Yes, I would also love to see a pic if possible too, very interesting if scary idea. Maybe if I have the trouble with this Uzi........

Correct! They're also narrower if that bothers you.

I have cut handle off a cheap Kookaburra and an MSR , both of which were round handle and made me grip lower down the handle. I did it after consulting a well known pod shaver. I kept the cut off bit to weigh ( ~ 0.2 oz ) just in case the balance did not feel right and replace with lead tape. If you bulk up the bottom handle with an extra half grip , you might end up gripping higher than usual reducing the necessity to cut off the handle. Using a mitre saw/ helps to keep the cut level and clean.
