Title: what is the best way to measure handle and spine?
Post by: brokenbat on January 21, 2014, 04:58:17 AM
How can I accurately measure the ovalness of a handle, and also the spine height? Calipers?

Best way is to use your hands to judge handle shape. As for spine height, lay the bat on it's side and use a ruler flat against the side of the edge to determine the highest point.

use hands to measure the handle? I meant how to quantify the ovalness of an oval handle (so the measurements can be used to replicate the same handle in the future).

Difficult one really. The beat you can probably do is, looking down from the top, measure the length and width of the widest part of the oval. You would get a far better result by being present when the handle was made, testing it as it is shaped.

If you really want to measure the 'ovalness' of the handle then I recommend calipers.  You will need to make multiple measurements up and down the handle to make sure that the oval is constant.  To get the perfect measurements you will need to rotate and re measure at each point at least 4 times.  Then plot it out on a piece of paper.

Spine height I would just use a caliper or compass.  If you don't have a caliper or compass, the boys at Its Just Cricket estimate it with a ruler and to be honest you would get pretty close by using this method. You can use two rulers (hold one flat on the high point of the spine) and then measure from the face to this ruler (does that make sense?).

Simple way if you don't have specialist tool at hand.

Lay it face down on a piece of paper. Draw round handle.

Lay it on it's edge, and carefully draw around the handle(keep your pen/pencil at right angle to the paper)

Use a tape measure to measure your marks.

I never thought of that method.  If done properly that could be the most accurate method of measuring!  I guess you would just have to be sure that the ovalness is even using this method.
