I have been reading and doing some research on how the bow effects the performance and the pickup of a cricket bat. Some say it adds power, some say it helps pick up.
Looking at some of the pics of pros bats, they seem to have a very pronounced bow especially SRTs bat.
If its a good thing to have, then why all bats are not bowed to maximum possible. Is it lack of skill or its just not worth doing it.
What are your thoughts on bowed bats and advantages or disadvantages of it. I have not seen or read any negative comments about bowed bat profile.
And do you like it or dont care. And why?
PS: Apologize if this has been discussed before. Please point me the thread if you can. Thx

I personally prefer a bow, helps me go over the top, and adds decent pick up to a 3lb plus bat.
But, with the increased want for bigger edges, and the flatter profiles bought about because, it seems very pronounced bows are disappearing from the shelfs.
In fact I believe it's just be asain made bats that still offer a pronounced bow.

I've never used a bat with a pronounced bow to it
I'm sure if it was such a performance / pick up aid, all bats would exploit it?
-
The way James Laver explained it to me was: the more the blade is bowed, the better the pick up(to a point). However for every mm the blade is bowed, the length of the sweet spot is reduced. Scat and Bradbury (now) do not bow there blades for this reason as the blade is put through a huge downward force to put the bow into it.
-
I suppose in some respect, it could help a really heavy bats pick up, but then wouldn't you just use a slightly lighter bat with a larger sweet spot ?
-
I know it is commanly repeated that a bow helps pick up, but how and why does it make the pick up lighter?
-
Depending on who makes a bat, the bow is imparted in different ways. The result is different performance from different makers.

What is not clear is - how much bow, which part and how it effects pickup and performance.
Thinking of ordering a custom bat, never gave much importance to bow, but his time want to include it in the requirements list :)
But not sure what it will do to the bat and what to ask for :D

the bow gets the weight of the bat above your hands faster, making it appear to pick up better.
on the bow, it is worth elaborating in that some firms press the bow into the blade, others cut the bow into the blade before pressing.

My 2 favourite bats both have massive bows in them. Thruxton SPS and Black Cat Shadow.

in them or on them? :)

When I was a junior/coming to adult, I had a Easton I bought at a car boot. Had such an extreme bow, and a loved it. Middle wasn't overly large, but I rolled with it, until it did a Carberry.
By then Easton had vanished. So was gutted. Discovered recently aero bought out Easton, but not sure aero have released any bats?
On a seperate not. Gray nics custom bats say "choose your bow, slight, pronounced or extreme!"

To add bows can accure naturally over time as well.
I prefer a flat face with a bow cut into the edges to make it appear there a bow.
Also some forward setting handles can make it appear bowed when it is not.

My latest b3s have forward set handles, as they don't add bow to the the bats.

Sometimes both. You would def get more runs if you went out to bat with a bow tied to the SCAT.
-
And the SCAT/TAS bat is feeling better every time I pick it up.

Some Batmakers obtain a bow by over pressing the cleft, this results in a reduction of performance

Is there a better way to obtain a Bow? Mr bb

The likes of B3 cut it into the willow before pressing.

I thought they did, but not according to streaky, And they don't offer more than a slight bow, I've tried, but only got a forward set handle.

Look at the GM batmaking video on YouTube.
The bow is cut into the blade before pressing
-
Bowing is best done in pressing and having the right press helps

Mainly the Asian mades, except for Salix, of course. In my opinion, they make the best use of the bow, and I believe it is a major reason why their bats pick up so well. I also know that, having visited their place a few times, they take pride in creating their bows, almost as if they are a work of art, which apparently not every bat maker is capable of achieving.

Don't know about anyone else, but I struggle with a bow. It creates too much loft.

I'm not a fan of bowing either. As above^^^

I guess then better pick up is the only benefit? I read somewhere it helps the ping due to the springyness in the blade, is that true?
Maybe good to have if you like low middle with thick toe.
thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts.
