So set off this morning to purchase my new bat for this season and really had no clue what I was wanting. Had a good look around and was torn between two bats being:
Kookaburra Kahuna 600
GN Powerbow Generation X 5 Star
After about a half hour of playing with them both and really not being able to pick between the two I ended up deciding on the GN based preferring the handle and the amazing grains it has.
So here is the bat

So the grains...

Tapped it up on with a mallet and feels very responsive throughout the bat. Can't wait to get it knocked in and get it in the nets!

Nice purchase. Like this shape, and that has some lovely grains.
Where did you purchase from?
And what happended to the Charlie French?
-
Purchased from Owzat. Apologies to the retailers on here but really wanted to pick it up and get a feel for it myself.
The plan was to check out Owzat then head over to CF. we didn't end up getting to CF as this and the Kook felt brilliant and at £175 was cheaper than any CF so went for this instead!
-
that s a lot of grains that is!

Gutted. 3rd time using the bat last night against a hard ball and nicked off. Only to look down at the bat and a huge chunk to have been taken off the edge. Am really disspointed that the bat hasn't withstood this. Its not even as though its a small crack on the edge, it really has taken a huge chunk out.
Not sure if Owzat/GN will do anything about it but am going to give them an email and see.
-
Hmmm. I would expect most retailers to argue that taking a chunk out of the edge like that would quote that you hadn't knocked it in properly on the edges...
-
need a good 4 hrs on the edge and toe on any bat !

Did you knock it in?
-
I maintain you can knock in any bat in less than an hour - give it plenty with the mallet, especially the edges and toe and get a rolling pin on the edges. You have to batter it with the mallet though!
-
Yeah, knocked it in, clearly not enough by the looks of it though. Still dissapointed.
-
agreed you can do it in quick time but compression of the fibres is better being done over time i concentrate on the edges only then knocking the middle in on the bowling machine while getting used to the pick of a new stick
-
Totally agree - knocking in over time is ideal, if you have that luxury. Just noting that it can be done on 'time saver' mode!
Spent a bit of time on my B3, 30 mins here and there for 3-4 weeks and it went great. In contrast, hammered the Bubble I bought of Jake for an hour or so, and have been breaking it in using Bola balls at nets - no problem at all with either bat...

From what I've seen, grainy bats (especially in areas where there's heartwood) are more likely to split like that, probably because there are more "joins" where the willow can split. Sorry to hear mate, that bat looks really good for a 5 star.
-
I was told from a batmaker at a very renowned company that if the grains aren't straight and are at an angle like this five star, then the bats most likely to split there

Ah, that's rather unfortunate... I don't think GN will really do anything about it, as you said, they would probably say you didn't knock the edges in enough. I always put fibreglass tape over the edges on scuffed bats, as it means that you can roll the edges over a smooth surface without the scuff sheet bubbling, and because edges can always do with just a little more protection. :) If it's anything, it doesn't look too bad, just knock in the surrounding areas to make the edge a bit smoother. :)
-
I second Chad's comments.
Those cracks should close a bit when you knock the area in. Then put a bit of edge tape down that edge and you will be nice and protected. That bat is very much still usable.
PS: What ball were you using to leave a black mark like that?

Very similar damage I did to my cor3(that was not knocked in) some hammer work around made it even out then some glue, before being taped and it's still very much a usable bat 3 years later,
Have to agree? Why is the ball mark black? Who was using such hard balls? If I ball feels horrible on the bat I have a look, if it's a bat breaker I ask the bowler to swap it, of he refuses, I'll just leave or pad up for rest of net to that ball. Really isn't worst losing a bat for,
-
I've emailed them both and are being helpful so i'm still hopeful something might get done. If not, as you say at least its still useable.
Its was actually a bowling machine ball that made that mark, must like eding it there (that may have even weakened it?)

Where was you at? Never known a bowling ball damage a bat. I've used them as the last stage of knocking in a few times!
-
A bola ball did that?
-
I am with Smiley here. I also have never seen a bola ball damage a bat... leave some weird dimple marks on a scuff sheet, but never damage a bat
-
must of had some wheels on it !
I usually use a bola on 60 odd mph for swing and turn it on its side at low 50s with max spin on it to knock mine in
-
Think a bola ball made the black mark and a cricket ball did the damage
-
That makes sense.
No if anything the bola ball should have compressed the fibres and made it stronger - it would have done some of the knocking in for you.
-
At Durham they annoyingly write with black sharpie on the machine balls - this runs of onto my bats and doesn't come off very well :@

Yeah that makes sense. Lol
-
Yeah Bola ball made the mark and cricket ball took out the chunk!
-
must of had some wheels on it !
Our opening bowler was bowling quick, my thigh is feeling it today also!

Brad? He does have some wheels! Give him a soft ball next week.
-
use some JIF or CIF i think its called now. My mother did it to my bat the night before my first ever county game .... looked brand new :(

Sure was! Was on his game last night and seriously hard to play!

I had damage like that low down on my new GM due to some cugina using a sports direct bat breaker.
A bit more knocking, watered down PVA in the crack, dowels in the edge (probably not required in your case as there's wood on both sides), a bit more knocking, tape the damage & put a new scuff sheet on.
Job done and it won't break again! ;)
