S Broad (Nottinghamshire - captain)
E Morgan (Middlesex - vice captain)
M Ali (Worcestershire)
R Bopara (Essex)
T Bresnan (Yorkshire)
J Buttler (Lancashire)
J Dernbach (Surrey)
H Gurney (Nottinghamshire)
A Hales (Nottinghamshire)
C Jordan (Sussex)
M Lumb (Nottinghamshire)
S Parry (Lancashire)
J Root (Yorkshire)
B Stokes (Durham)
J Tredwell (Kent)
L Wright (Sussex)
Why dernbach? Why do they keep picking him! Arrrghhhh
People will be happy to see Ali I'm there going on other threads.
I'm looking forward to see hales in an odi, see what he does in the power play!
But who's the back up keeper? Root?
-
I am not quite sure what Dernbach keeps doing to justify selection.....
The team looks like a squad of okay cricketers who could spark on the day. But nothing on the consistant front.
-
Looks like a bit like a strong county squad?
-
It looks like a thanks for coming squad.
-
Hopefully Gurney gets a go. Would offer some decent variation.
-
On it's day I believe it could fire and beat anyone, but I doubt there's enough consistency in there to win a tournament unfortunately.
Hales, Morgan and buttler will be expected to score a huge amount for sun to get anywhere.
-
Nice to see James Whitaker fronting up and refusing to speak to the press.
That takes balls....
-
But who's the back up keeper? Root?
Presumably if the keeper gets injured they can replace an injured player in the sqaud and just fly someone out? Kieswetter probably?
-
Would Graham Napier not have been a shout for this sqaud?
-
Bresnan/Dernbach/Root.............WTF?
-
Dernbach has got to be blackmailing one of the selectors somehow. Basically he could refuse not to bowl and still get picked.
Not sure T20 is Moeen's best format to showcase his talents, but good for him to have got a place. Parry is a decent T20 bowler, and may well get a game, seeing how much the pitches in West Indies seem to spin of late.....
Napier probably should be in the squad, but he's a bit old and injury prone for that. Plus people think he's a one trick pony after his 152*, even though he's probably the best and most consistent yorker bowler in the country.
-
Bresnan/Dernbach/Root.............WTF?
Because Root averages over 50 with a high score of 90* and a strike rate of 140? Plus he bowls and is one of our best fielders?
-

Was thinking more his bowling with batting being a bonus. Got to be a better shout than Dernbach surely?
-
Bresnan did poor in the tests, odi's and t20's.
Suppose he's part of broads ps3/twitter group so keeps getting selected.
As for Dernbach, it's probably to keep the SA quota in the team
-
How can Napier not be in the squad?
-

Oh definitely. That was the jist of my post.
-
Napier's a better choice then wright
-

He was in the last squad but must have not been on his game.
I'm a huge Napier fan but maybe he's just not got that International quality they look for. Also, they have Luke Wright who is very similar.
Dernbach? Surely he's a decent county player and no more.
The squad seems to be missing a real world class player. Oh, I forgot, KP is persona non-grata.
-
Napier was in the 2009 squad, three comps ago and didn't play.
-
Napier and Wright are completely different players. Wright is a top order bat and (now days) occassional seam bowler, you wouldn't trust him as one of a 5 man attack.
Napier is a bowler who can give it some humpty. Good opening bowler and number 7 bat.
-
good thing is they have moved on! its a fresh start and all that. Not many from the odi and t20 in Australia are in....
-
Would have been good to see Gary Ballance or Craig Kieswetter instead of Root ?
If they want a fresh start why no Topley or Willey for Dernbach ?
Moeen Ali beats Borthwick and Parry beats Briggs ?
If Gurney gets a call up then surely players like Allenby, Trego, Napier and Stevens (if pending investigation goes well) should have had a shout ?
And what more does James Taylor have to do ??
-
Bresnan/Dernbach/Root.............WTF?
I'd include Bopara in the above. So much for a so called rebuilding
-
What is Root going to gain from playing t20 when he could go away a fix some glaringly obvious flaws in his test match technique. Very soon he'll be washed like Bopara.
-
Kieswetter, Topley, Carberry, Vince, Willey were all top performers last year and aren't near the squad. Peter Trego should be involved as well. All the players in the current side have fear, baggage and/or will have battle scars.
-
And broad as captain is embarrassing. His judge of a review should tell you all you need to know of his cricketing expertise. Shambolic and a captain shouldn't stand and point fingers like Broad did recently.

I was watching the 2010 final on YouTube, last ball aus push for two, luke wright thumbles the pick up, and stump mike picks up "for f###s sake Luke! what you playing at"
Not very good leadership skills IMO? (I know he wasn't leader then, but will he change?)
-
What about that lad who basically won the domestic T20 for Northants?
Glad to see Moeen Ali in there, top player and made for the conditions - I don't mind Dernbach in there as he can win you a game on his own on his day, however ultimately he could also cost you a game - at least he's more exciting to watch than Bresnan who I cannot understand why he is in this squad ahead of Napier, Topley or any of these > http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/bowling/most_wickets_career.html?id=7907;type=tournament (http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/bowling/most_wickets_career.html?id=7907;type=tournament)
Surprised not to see Samit Patel in there, would be a good addition for me.
-
The only game Dernbach could help you win is a spot the biggest tit in the ground competition.
-
Napier's a better choice then wright
No he isn't. Napier would be there as a bowler who can biff an average attack down the order. Wright will be taken as an opening bat who can bowl if required. You can't compare the 2 and say you'd take one over the other as this would mean a complete reshuffle of the order.
-
West Indies will be happy with this squad selection as will all the major contenders for the T20 competition.
-
Parry? How has he leap frogged everyone?
I still think Morgan would be a better choice as captain in general and perhaps even in the OD format if Cook gives it up. That too many fielders outside the circle ball clearly shows how calm he can be in highly pressurised situations and take everything in around him yet still be a class player.

Wright is not a international cricketer. Bowling goes at 10rpo and can't slog in international cricket. He's had plenty of chances

How do you work out that he's not an international player when he's one of the best batsman in the IPL and Big Bash against the creme dela creme of bowlers. One observation was made by one of the Aussie pundits is that Wright doesn't seem as comfortable at 3 than opening the innings in T20.
-
Good to see the left arm quick bowler being selected, brings another angle of attack that England have been lacking since Sidebottom!
-
If England keep picking Lumb then Wright won't open. He should open though, every day of the week.

So averaging 21 in the ipl and overall t20 of 25 makes him the best?

T20 batting is not solely about the average - I cannot remember where, but I think somewhere in the world(aus/nz I think) they are creating a new factor which T20 batsman will be calculated where it takes the average and strike rate in to consideration.
Anyway, take a look at this - http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/284267.html (http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/284267.html), Luke Wright is the 2nd highest English T20 run scorer after Owais Shah of which Luke Wright has the 3rd best Strike Rate, behind Gayle and Pollard in the top 15 batsmen in the world.
-
Your only as good as your last tournament,
Well

3rd on the list for mr wright, and that's in a tournament, that hales, lumb and kieswetter, all opened for there respective sides.
So to me he should be opener for England, especially as lumb is quite out of form currently.
-

I would rather he play and not bowl than play and bowl.
-

I think David Willey is injured. But anyone instead of Dernbach!
Surprised Gary Ballance has been omitted.

so that makes him international quality? failed in his last 3 international innings. Looked out of his depth
-

Yes. Look at all of the players in and around him in that order - hard statistics say a lot.
-

To be honest you could say that referring to nearly any the players in all 3 England squads at the moment and I still wouldn't be able to guess who you were talking about... I don't think now is the best time to be deciding if players are international quality or not personally.
-
England don't have many international class bats currently.. If you literally go on the theme of 'only as good as your last tournament/2series for tests) then we have... Umm.. Bell, buttler did well in slap and tickle,, Morgan looked up there in Odis..
That's it ?
-
It's a fun conundrum ain't it?
1. Sack the same old faces they're useless!
2. Well, this squad of newbies doesn't look very strong does it?
-
i love the anti root brigade.
why root there meant to be new faces- he's 22 he is the new face.
but he hasn't done anything in this format- 50avg, 140Sr, a 90 of 49 balls, and fielding that took yorkshire to the champions league
he should be playing fc to get fc form - no fc tournament on during t20 wc.
what's gonna be the next reason?
-
Whose anti root?
