Hi guys
Basically need a bit of help.
Many moons ago I badly rolled my ankle. It's never healed correctly.
Basically at present it's near impossible to kick a rugby/soccer ball.
Also batting is proving rather problematic.
I've iced it many times, but the swelling just doesn't seem to go down.
Any tips?
Thanks

Obviously seeing a physio might be an idea but it sounds like you need to spend some serious time away for the things that hurt it and do strengthening exercises. Things like wobble boards etc will be your friend for these.

As part of your recovery schedule, I would suggest you buy a good quality neoprene ankle support.
Use it when you are just sitting around the house for example. The heat that the neoprene material produces helps in the healing process. It's not a miracle cure, but from personal experience it certainly helps.

I rolled my ankle a couple of years ago playing football and I would certainly recommend getting a good ankle support.
This is the ankle support that I got http://www.bioskin.com/featured/triloktm-ankle-brace.html (http://www.bioskin.com/featured/triloktm-ankle-brace.html) - there are cheaper alternatives however I can really recommend getting this one. I believe these are the same ankle supports that Andy Murray and a lot of tennis players wear.
When you get the support wear it as much as you can, it's applied over the top of your socks so it's very comfortable and will aid the healing process - I still wear it now when I'm playing cricket for my own peace of mind.

Thanks guys
I'll get one of those bio skin ankle guards.
Hopefully I'll be back to kicking a rugby ball, pain free, for the first time nearly a decade!

I did this and ended up having bone and tissue removed from my ankle followed by some physio. It's now stronger then before and doesn't need any supports. I would definitely get it checked out by a professional (private healthcare if you have it). The NHS missed the spur of bone repeatedly and it was only upon referral that it was spotted and sorted.

i had a similar issue. ended up being a stress fracture (only showed up in an MRI). only solution is 4-6 weeks rest.

If you did it a while ago and didn't receive appropriate treatment / recovery then there is a fair chance the continual swelling that exists will be scar tissue. Until this is broken down (can be painful) or anything more serious required no amount of ice or ankle support will be a permanent fix.
Supports definitely have their benefits although they exist mainly to prevent further injury as opposed to strengthening the area of the body they are protecting.

recommend seeing a physio as just a general doctor might just advise rest which isn't always the best way to sort it out

Thanks guys.
I'll look into seeing a physio, as my ankle seems to be getting worst.

physio is the way to go and plenty or rest.....rolled mine on football while practicing alone....i was down on the same place for half an hour in pain b4 i could move.....went to doctor many times who suggested to rest and diagnosed loose ligament.....The ankle hurted at a specific angle for almost three years and now its all healed up....I was poor enough to spend on physio:(
