I thought I would hijack this a little - rather than having a random list of names (some retired) lets challenge ourselves to say who has the best batting technique and why... this might make it a little more interesting.

Edit - I have amended the opening post to make this more interesting.
AB - due to his all around ability against pace and spin - his ability to hit the ball all around the wicket and to use his feet against spin. Runs in all conditions are impressive too.

Since there is no absolute definition of what makes a great technique, you could argue that the answer to who should be Cheteshwar Pujara and the answer to why should be because he has the best average of them all. Actually, if you combine that with volume of runs then the second name on the list, Kumar Sangakkara, would not be a terrible answer...
But if you have a more esoteric definition, it becomes very tricky; do you look at range of attacking strokes, defensive solidity, apparant time to play the shot, orthodoxy vs unorthodoxy...there are a lot of possible variants.
I guess De Villiers would be pretty close - there is not a lot he doesn;t do well, and the only weakness he has ever shown, against the ball coming back at him, he has addressed very well since. I wouldn't go for Bell myself - he has the orthodox stuff off pat but does little more and his results should be better...

But then the likes of Gayle and Warner would win and they certainly don't have the besr technique?

I picked Kumar Sangakarra as I could watch him bat all day but on reflection, those with the best technique would surely be most adapt at scoring in any form of the game. Therefore I'd change my answer to AB. I cant think of anyone who is so comfortable to change his style to suit the situation. All the names on the list are exceptional at one form or another but AB just seems to play so well in every form. He would be first on a list for a world 11 touring squad for all three formats! (him and maybe Dhoni)

My question was aimed at people who actually like cricket though :-[
Gayle, Warner, Bailey, Finch are fun to watch for about 5 minutes but to be honest step and fetch cricket isn't what I'd pay the most to watch.

On his day, I love to watch afridi bat. Yet he's probably not in the top 200 players in terms of technique.
Hamla looks lovely when batting always has. But avb just seems to have time to burn. If a 100mph plus player came in and was swinging it, I still think he'd have time to play.
It's not test, but the fact he reversed lapped steyn in last years ipl, shows how much time he has.

Well for me it has to be Jonathan Trott when he was in his prime, I think this due to the way his trigger got him advancing into the ball with all his weight and how he drove the ball with ease and looked classy doing it...however this was poor towards the end of his career. My other choice would be Ian Bell again due to his elegance however Ricky Ponting has the best pull shot imo

ABdV got my vote as his all round shots are top quality. Plus more importantly, he gets himself in a fantastic body position very early!!
Has he the best front foot drive? No, I think Bell has. Back foot drive? No, I think Amla has. Pull shot? No, Ponting. Best hitting without moving? No, Gayle! Best hand/eye coordination? No, KP.
But if you put all these skills and shots together and try to make one complete batsman, then the closest you'll get (IMO) is ABdV!!

I'd pay more to see Chris Martin get a hundred than Chris Gayle.

Ab has the most natural sporting ability no doubt but I like watching pujara and trott.
Bell looks technically very good but agree sangakkara sheer quantity and quality in a average batting side at times tips the scales for me.

I agree with the definition - whom would you pay to watch score a hundred (especially in test matches).
As an example, though Kohli has scored at home and away, I doubt he's better to your eyes in comparion with AB.
