Title: What's the total cost of your 2014 match kit?
Post by: toenails97 on March 09, 2014, 10:12:43 PM
This was done a while back, and everyone seemed to enjoy the thread so thought I'd start it off for the 2014 season - so what is the cost of your match kit?
I'm awaiting a few items so won't put mine up yet but will in the next few days...it's disappointing how much you let yourself go when buying kit ;)
Also prices are what you paid

This is the least I've spent since I started playing :(. No reason really either.

Bats

New RPC  custom - 250
Last years match bat as second - 0
New net bat, Blueroom storm pro - 200

Pads
New RPC Heritage - 65

Gloves
New 4x RPC Heritage - 200

Helmet
New 2013 masuri elite - 50

Thigh/inner/chest/arm guard
Strettons for all - 0

Spikes
Not brought any yet

That's it I think, not I have much else new... Few grips, bat tape aside. I have sold my net bat from 2013 and my 2012 kooka match bat. Plus my 2013 pads and 4 sets of gloves too, so I have recouped a fair bit on them.

Only New stuff - £190

B3 Bat - £80
BB LE - £70
County Gloves - £25
Asic Rubber Soled Shoes - £15

Had to throw one pair of gloves away, hence the glove purchased. Ditto the rubbers. Bat's were bargains and though I don't need them it will save my match bats from further damage in nets. If the new bats play in enough might use them for matches. Rest of the stuff is last years kit.

Unbelievably I haven't bought anything yet for this season.

Still loving my BR pads and gloves so they will stay until they fall off my between slowly run singles.

need some spikes - unsure on Pima, Adidas or Nike this season.

My biggest cost will be / has been Teamwear at the new club. Playing shirt, Polo, Training top and Jumper was £100 (reduced price I believe). and the rest of it: Playing trousers, Shorts, Track Pants, Training sweater, and club cap will be around £120.

OOOH yeah and socks.... I need lots and lots of lovely fluffy socks.

Bat: dont have one yet but will be £175 or £200
Pads: Puma Pink ones from 2010 £40 (in sale)
Gloves: M&H Distinction from 2011 £90 (i got them in the sale)
Boots: Asics from 2009 £45 (in sale) but i have some Puma Evo things that i dont like (£40 in Pro Direct Sale)
Helmet: Black Masuri with Woodworm Titanium grille £70 all in i think
Thigh pad: Aero p1 which i dont use £45 and a pair of short things £20

total cost of my kit in last 4 years is ........

£330

I did buy a MH Distinction in 2011 for £185 and a couple of BB bats which i have sold to people at my club for the same i paid for them.

Not bad at all ........ £515 spent on kit in the last 4 years, nearly the cost of one bat these days!!!

best thing about wearing old kit is that it is very comfy and the fielding team tend to think that you are a rabbit. Takes them about 10 overs and 30 or so runs for them to realise it isnt luck and you can actually bat.

That's alot for somebody who isn't playing much  ;)

to be fair that is kit purchases spent over a 3 year period and a lot of the cost have been off-set by the sale of older kit and a loft clear out of my old golf kit etc.

I am not sure I paid all that for my kit - the pads and gloves were bought at a discount but those would be the replacement costs.

Most of my kit is at least worn in and not all brand spanking new! Since last season I have sold two/three bats and bought two bats the costs just about netted out. Sold older gloves and bought new ones, there was a cost to that!! I have sold an aweful lot of stuff over the last few months either on here or eBay. I have used the estimated replacement costs should the kit get half inched...

I would say that over this winter my net spend on cricket kit is less than £100 - which is offset by the sale of golf stuff - so Nick I have probably spent less than you ;)

best thing about wearing old kit is that it is very comfy and the fielding team tend to think that you are a rabbit. Takes them about 10 overs and 30 or so runs for them to realise it isnt luck and you can actually bat.

I kind of agree with this - although I like to look smart rather than overly dishevelled. There is a view that you can intimidate the oppo buy looking like you know what you are doing...

Is that in pounds?

yes

I'm blaming b3 and my love of a bargain for spending more than you Buzz lol.

I think you are right in principle that if it's just wear and tear, then kit shouldn't cost much more than £100 over the winter. Putting bats aside, pads/gloves/boots are the main wear items. You can probably do it for £100-250 depending on whether you want to shop at sports direct or buy proper gear.
Title: Re: What's the total cost of your 2014 match kit?
Post by: GarrettJ on March 10, 2014, 10:52:04 AM
you can get proper gear from sports direct or you can go to pro direct and pray they have them in stock.

no need what so ever to pay more than 60% of the RRP on any kit other than a bat.

I'm a little more restrained than some on this thread, even managed to cut down from 3 pairs of pads to 1 and down to 2 pairs of gloves over the winter too.

Bat             Redback Paradox premium £145
Gloves         SS Gladiator pro £25 - picked up for me by a work colleague who had a trip out to India recently
Pads           Adidas adipure £0 - won from pro direct cricket on twitter
Thigh pad    Aero p2's £0 - won from compare sports kit
Helmet        Ayrtek premier titanium £95 - from IJC about two years ago
Bag             Slazenger v360 duffle about £40
Spikes         Asics strike rate £30

Total £335, not including whites, caps and other bits of stuff as I tend to pick that type of thing up cheaply off ebay or in sales. Only the gloves and pads are new for this year, if I'd not won the adidas pads then I'd have carried on using my dewberry thruxtons from last year that I sold on here a while ago.

I've bought and sold a fair amount of stuff on here and on ebay over the last 3 years but have been lucky enough to win quite a bit of free kit so I'd guess I've recouped quite a lot of what I've spent.

I think this is why cricket as a game is struggling in some parts of the country! You need to fork out over £100 on kit plus membership fees on top and then pay for your tea, it's an expensive game and getting harder and harder to attract new people to the sport in my opinion.

Neon everything - effectively a grand total of £0 (One bonus of spending countless hours per day running the company)

Along with that I'm using my Ayrtek, a Pair of Puma EvoSpeeds and shortly a set of Stretton Fox's - just need bonus day to come around and I can get them ordered!

A slight variation on a theme and hope that its is OK to post it on this thread.

Having a son who is a kit junky I would be very interested to know what juniors (or their parents!) spend on kit; I'm thinking of the 13-16 age group. In my day you were lucky if you had your own bat!
Title: Re: What's the total cost of your 2014 match kit?

Sold a fair few junior bats myself - don't advertise them atm but a snip at £100!

I always remember my first proper bat - Duncan Fearnley Hammer, used to go like an absolute rocket, I put Brett D'Oliveira onto the roof of the next door bowling alley using it - probably about 12/13 at the time too, that bat lasted a good 3 seasons if I remember rightly

Mr Neon be careful taking goods without paying for them, if the inland revenue find out they will be all over you like a rash and it will be treated as wages or drawings if you arent a limited company.

I play at 2 clubs. And am invovled eoth several others. And know people around .

Not one of them clubs have a kit bag. As it was dit hed years ago due to lack of use. Mainly because the bats were planks. And the pads still had bucckles on them.

Clubs should be encouraged to buy a decent kit for there kit bag in an attaempt to entice and keep people playong who cant afford decent kit.

Maybe the ecb could put money into vouchers to buy decent quality kitbags.
And the likes of vitas/ijc/uzi do high quality kit bag deals for them vouchers to be used on.

When i was a youth my family was poor. So i had to use kit bought from a car boot, as did my dad. But it was still better than what was in the clubs kit. Which was quite frankly embarrassing.

If there was some midrange gm, ton, kook gear in there. And have been more enticed to use it. And felt better about playing.

Totally agree with this, I for one would be more than happy to join a scheme like this - great idea

We need to get more people playing the sport, whatever their background - I'd hate to think someone couldn't enjoy cricket just because they can't afford kit

Very well behaved indeed. You are unlikely to fit in 'round here showing that kind of fiscal responsibility..........

so if they ask you to reconcile your stock movements to your sales/purchases how are you going to do it? I know the answer (im a finance controller/director) but im interested in your approach because im not sure you will be able to provide an answer to them.

Well the kit in question is still under the ownership of the company - it was used for samples and testing originally so its all under R&D costs. If it ever became a problem I'd buy it off the company, simple invoice would suffice - I've put enough money in to cover the kit I have at least 10 times over at RRP anyway so I could easily just say I've purchased it legally

Didn't play at all last season because of work, so thought I'd buy some new kit this season to G myself up a bit ;)

Last seasons kit:
Merlin Legend £150
Merlin Legend pads and gloves £75
GM 808 gloves £25 (tony pryce)
Matsuri Ti £0 (free from my brother)
Adidas 22yds highs £50 (some sports shop that closed down in Plymouth)

Gray nicolls box ;)
Newbury SPS bag £75

This was my kitbag from when I last played. Haven't needed to buy a lot, but wanted too...

SF Saphire/SS Heritage Ton £200 for both! From online stockist (stoked, both are looking really good pieces of timber)
Still got the Merlin Legend
SS super Test gloves £28
SS Test Opener pads £25 (both from online stockist, slight discount purely because these replaced out of stock items I ordered)
Same GM 808 gloves
NB orange spikes £50 ebay (sold my bowling boots to my dad and the unilites died)
Same Lid
Same body protection
Newbury SPS blew up when moving house so opted for the Salix Pod One Tri wheel £75 (cricket direct)
All my new clubs kit (whites, trackies, Gillette, shorts...) Agame sports £170

If anyone wants some Merlin pads and gloves (gloves unworn and pads worn for this and last years winter nets) let me know looking for £40ish

My nearest cricket shop is miles away so most stuff is hunted on eBay or bought online.
