Title: Junior bat....the hawk xb500 any good?
Post by: armchairbradman on March 12, 2014, 10:11:59 PM
I'am looking at a new bat for my 9yr old. Used a Newbery "Tomohawk" last season.....was OK but has split. Will be used regularly as plays for 4 different sides at various levels....was looking at the Hawk XB500. Any thoughts? Or experiences ??

You can't go wrong with a Hawk bat. They make great bats and very widely used in Worcs and B'ham leagues. A lot of mates have them and they all love them. A few juniors I teach have them too and they like their bats.

Look at Aldred's junior bat offer. Very good idea.

You can buy a hawk bat with confidence in its durability and performance. The X 500  has a deep bow  to assist pickup and thick edges.

Only thing I'd say is there are 5 top end hawks at my club and tbh, they aren't great.. Especially as they charge a fortune. The best hawk user used my bat and instantly threw his away.. Literally!! I don't doubt they are a decent brand but tbh, they charge a fortune and I'm not overly impressed

If you want some serious value - check out the MSR junior bats - I have just got a size 3 for my son and let me tell you it is a super little bat. I suspect you could by two from MSR for the price of one Hawk (and have change!)

Hawk are decent bats , The main reason why it's popular among the Worc's league is because of after sales support which is fantastic and discounted deals to returning customers. I found them not consistent enough in all honesty. Some were excellent whereas some average.

Another point to make is your son/daughter will grow pretty quickly and until they reach their teens it may be worth going for the cheaper, but still excellent MSR.

I have a Hawk bat that I got for Christmas, adult SH was pressed very hard so I can see the comment about durability but after a fair bit of whacking with a mallet and some aggressive netting its opening up nicely now. Pick up is very good.

Based on the original post and armchairbradmans sons bat splitting plus the number of games the bat will be used for a bat from hawk should be okay once correctly knocked in due to the pressing.

What offer is this? Always thought for an adult bat an Aldred would be top of my list, but as the Aldred junior bats are the same price as an adult bat, for a junior bat £130 for a G3 isn't competitive with other handmade bats. H4L do Pro grade junior bats for the same price as the Aldred G3 for example.

He replaces the handles as they grow I believe and uses the same wood as adult bats. Investment if you go 5, 6, Harrow.

I could be wrong

would recommend anything from the guys at hawk. Recently bought myself an XB300 and its an absolute belter, best bat i've used to date! Its good to go down to the workshop and have a look at the clefts of wood they have, you can pick what you like, and they make it to your specifications. Also any problems you have with the bat you can take down any time and they'll sort it out there are then
