Title: Reaching for the saw, can a bat handle the chop
Post by: thecord on March 14, 2014, 12:16:38 AM
Could only find minimal reference to this when searching and was wondering if anyone had any experience of making a DIY super short handle?
I grip my bats very low down and the protruding handle can become quite uncomfortable during an extended innings (rare) or net session (more likely). I've therefore been toying with the idea of a super short handle bat but have been tempted to chop the end off an old bat handle first before I fork out on anything.
Has anyone tried this before, got any advice for doing it or experience with super short handles?

Dave procricket made a lh bat SH not long ago.

There's a guy at my club always makes his bats ssh when he buys them. Make sure you leave a lip so the twine doesn't cone undone is as much advice I can give mate.

I have done it mate turning a Long handle into a short handle bud.

I will find the thread in fact look down at this http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=28498.0 (http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=28498.0)

I chopped off the tip and glued the remaining handle then applied my own meterial tape to create another too mate works well and I have have not had any dramas with it mate

Saw an interview with Brad Haddin and he says he does it to his own bats as well.

Thanks for the replies guys. Think I will give it a try, just need to decide how much to chop off now.
Will post some pics if there is any appetite to see it.

Chop off the knob at the top then cut off some of the handle and glue the knob back on

There's been quite enough chopping off of knobs in the news this week already  :o

wouldn't this totally change the bat's balance? or are we supposed to apply a bit of lead tape to neutralize the change in balance?

Something that I will look to find out. I guess it depends how much you reduce the handle length by as to how much of an impact it will have on the balance.
Part of the reason I'm going to experiment with an old bat rather than chopping up my match bat

Just don't take too much off, it's always more than you think.

Less is more in this case.

There are a few ways to do it, I would , take the binding off, mark up cuts, drill two holes down the Handel then make your cuts, possibly on an angle. Then dowel the top back on and rebind

I've done this a few times, the balance is altered so I used golf tape / lead tape to help correct it.

It works great - in my opinion
