Title: Your own pros and cons for the amount of grips you personally use...
Post by: 19reading87 on March 14, 2014, 10:03:44 AM
Morning Gents,

I realise that the majority of handle sizes are different as are people's hand sizes but what I wondered was, why do you use the amount of grips you do?

For me regardless of handle size I use 2 grips. Reason for this is a find my bottom hand doesn't strangle the handle as much. Also I prefer the feel. For example if I don't middle the ball the 2 grips softens the affect. Kind of physiological.... However the cons are I feel that with 1 grip or 1 1/2 I get more control over how I play the shot and manouver the ball around.

Looking forward to reading your reason

My reason is psychological as well.
I feel that if the grip/handle is too thin my hands get too active and I tend to flick across the line of the ball, trying to work everything from off to leg.
If I thicken up the handle with extra grips I feel as if it helps keep my hands more passive and allows me to play straighter. As I said more mental than physical. Although, if you watch golf you will notice some pros have really thick grips on their putters, it is for the same reason, to keep the hands as passive as possible through the stroke keeping the blade of the putter square.

Always preferred one grip only
Actually picked up my Affinity spectre with a half grip extra for the bottom hand, but removed it,as I felt a slight lack of control with it there?
I do prefer a thinner handle, as I can grip the bat tighter and manoeuvre the bat into position easier?
I'm sure that's not really technically correct, but that's what I feel more comfortable with and I've found I play a lot more shots easier with the ability to grip the bat this way

i always have 2.5 grips on mine for a similar reason. stops me grabbing the bottom too hard. no other reason for it really. just did it, liked it and havent changed since.

I go for 1 and a half.
Half a spiral on the bottom and then on top is a chevron. I do this mainly for control and due to the fact I am unbelivabley bottom handed. The spiral is purley out of comfort and feels nice under the chevron. :)

I use 2 grips on some bats and 3 on others. Why? Well I'm afraid there's no science behind it.

When I was young, and barely employed I could not afford a bat, and the only guy out our club who'd lend me one, which wasn't a sports direct special was a big kid.
3lb bat. 3grips as he has bucket sized hands. He's our finisher. 6.8 - and 24 stone of him.

He wasn't gonna let me remove a grip was he?

After 4years of using his bat. I found that 1 grip handles didn't feel right. Tooth pick springs to mind.
So I've stuck with it,

Small hands and 1 grip allows me to get my top hand controlling the bat. Recently handles have got thinner at the bottom so now I use tape or a half grip to thicken the bottom hand. I like the  "V" of my bottom hand snug behind that handle and in control.

I used 1.5 or 2 grips  for around 6 seasons. About a season and half ago I reverted back to one and feel more in control.

I vary completely depending on which bat!

Lighter bats like my Salix only use one spiral, but heavier bats I put a chevron over the top of a spiral.

Also find that with English bats with a prominent oval handle on the bottom hand I prefer one grip. Because Indian bats tend to have a round handle I put two on to thicken the feel

I have massive hands one grip should be enough if the bat is properly balanced

For me if I needed another I would go double bind but as I cut the top section of bind off as well I like he thinnest handle at the too I an get

It depends what my top grip is. If it's thin (such as a chevron) I have 2 of them and an extra half for the bottom hand.

If it's a thick grip (like a GM ripple - my current set up) I have one I them and an extra half on the bottom hand.

I'm fairly fussy about the feel of the grip so I can spend a bit of time getting the half on the bottom perfectly positioned.

2.5, or (in the case of my B3) double twine for bottom hand, then two grips.  Thicker handle the better for me.  It take the dead weight up but (in my mind at least) it improves the balance of the bat, as I always go for low middles

I have big hands so like big handles as anyone who has picked up my bats will agree and will always have a spiral on top but vary what's underneath to get thickness I need

On current I have chevron the a half spiral on bottom hand and a quarter octopus on back to oval up then spiral on top

Like thick bottom hand as helps to stop me over using bottom hand
