Title: Tennis elbow
Post by: wilkie113 on March 20, 2014, 09:14:44 AM
I've bee plagued with a bout of tennis elbow for a while now, and have recently started getting pins and needles in my hands, both arms. I work as a laborer, and this doesn't help at all. As I'm waiting to go and see the doctor, has anyone else experienced anything this bad tennis elbow wise? Or am I worrying for the sake of worrying

Tom

Had it quite bad for the first time when my son was born from holding him funny, got to be really painful. Did a lot of research and rest was the best thing that was recommended probably hard given what you do. I also had some deep tissue massage on my forearms which helped immensely but extremely painful, plus lots of iced and heat. You can also have an injection or acupuncture which is supposed to have benefits.

Cheers for the reply mate, will see what the doctor recommends, I've been told to rest it, but working as a laborer it's pretty hard haha!

Rest is important Tom, hard given your role but it really would make a difference. Massages will help initially and when you do go back to doing something that'll set it off you can get support bands for just below he elbow (see nadal and other tennis/cricket players).. That offers support to the affected area and can help.

I'll ask my doc friend at work next week for an answer all medical and pm you it.

Supports have been working bud, but this week the pain has gone from not really noticeable to excruciating, and not being able to feel my hand sometimes is worrying haha!

If it is then an operation may be required

Doctor diagnosed as carpel tunnel, anti-inflammatory tablets been given. So just a waiting game to see if it clears up

If it doesn't clear up will more than likely need an operation the quack said :(

I'm actually hoping that it does clear up! Or surgery may put me out of cricket for a few weeks lol! But in all fairness, I'd rather get it sorted ASAP

Oh Wrinklie - I'm sorry to hear of your troubles!

Out of cricket for a few weeks you say? Better let a 'proper batsman' look after the Dynadrive then :)

Forget doctors and physios. Waste of time. Especially doctors. They will recommend surgery as the first option because they generally have very little clue when it comes to sports related injuries. I have spent my life treating/managing my own injuries and advising our customers. We see a lot of tennis elbow, wrist and forearm injuries. You can treat all soft tissue injuries yourself. There are a number of machines on the market that treat soft tissue injuries more effectively than any treatment you can receive from a physio. Apologies to any physios out there but it's true. I have an APS therapy machine which helped me overcome a chronic back injury that no doctors or physios were able to fix in a satisfactory way Their solution was to stop running/playing sport (I am talking about half a dozen different physios/doctors). The APS machine fixed the problem (a chronic injury that had been with me for 5 years) in 1 day!!!!
Short of spending $1000 on one of these machines the next best thing I have used is Rocktape. It is inexpensive and effective. Try it before you waste money on any more doctors. There is a taping method for tennis elbow and for carpel tunnel. Try it!!!

Wilkie my good friend sorry to hear about your bad luck!as for the comment above they won't want to do surgery unless that's a final option, do your best to rest and do what the doctor says to you! It's killing me not playing cricket but gotta think of the long run!

Alternatively listen to your doctor, possibly get put on the NHS's 3 year waiting list and let them slice you up mate, from a couple of people I know who've had it done, the surgery is really worth it if it's required!

Dr's know best.

I missed the 2010 season through knee surgery matey so know how you feel about missing the game. Worth it though, and ensure you do the recovery exercises properly!! Don't skive them as they will help you in the long run.

Steyn has a elbow problem, he tapes his arms up so you could try that in the short term.

If you do that, don't buy the £1.35 a roll with free shipping tape from china, it's about as sticky as toilet roll! Probably worth spending a bit more and getting the decent stuff if you decide to go down that road.

Quite agree. I don't think there is actually any evidence (medically) that it does any good but placebo effect is powerful :)

My mother's a doctor as well as an alternative therapist and swears by kinesiotape.  Along with acupuncture, it's helped clear up a minor case of tennis elbow, a frozen shoulder and continues to support my dodgy knee

As i said, people believe it works and even without medical evidence it can be enough to help. Worth a shot.

Well, back in the same position again, with it getting worse, and waiting to go back to the doctors. Absolute pain in the balls

I'm not entirely sure that is where the pain is supposed to be Thomas!

If you have a painful, tingling sensation down there, that may be something entirely different - you haven't mixed up the Immac with the shower gel again have you?

I had very bad tennis elbow a few years ago to the point I couldn't hold a cup, let alone hold my bat. A friend is an acupuncturist and went to her for a course of 3 treatments. Took about a month to complete and about a further month for it to clear up. Seemed odd to have needles put in your back and feet to sort your elbow, but it worked and I've never had it since. Certainly worth a try.

Are you a pregnant woman?

this can be operated on to cure (just ask a load of Mum's who have suffered with it...)
