Title: Bat handles
Post by: kal_m on March 26, 2014, 03:09:20 PM
Hello all,
I was wondering what is the difference between a 9 piece cane handle and a 12 piece sarawak cane handle. Is one necessarily better than the other or any distinct advantages to either of these?
Would love to know the difference.

Thanks.

I reckon a 12 piece will have a little more flex and better vibration dampening.

The way I understand it, the more pieces, the more flex

So does that mean 12 piece is better than 9 piece?

That depends how stiff you want the handle to be.

Unfortunately this is an area that I am clueless about. I generally know what kind of handle my bats have but it was never factored in when buying a bat.

In theory, the stiffer the handle, the more power is transferred to the ball.  However, if you mishit it, then you are more likely to get painful vibrations througgh the handle.  A more flexible handle will give you a bit more "whip" on the ball and be softer, so the vibration won't be as bad on mishits.  But the power transferred won't be as great.

Of course, I could be wrong as it's first thing on a monday morning and I'm not properly caffeinated yet!

I am not sure on the flex point.

if you have multiple items glued together, I would say that makes it more rigid than fewer.

by that logic a 4 piece handle will be more flexible than a 7, 9 or 12 piece one.

The other thing to check is the number of pieces. Typically, if you have three springs, you will have 4, 8 or 12 pieces of cane. If you have two springs, you will have 3, 6 or 9 pieces.

Typically, two spring handles are less flexible than three springs.

I have 9 and 12 piece cane handles on my bats the 12 piece has more flex due to the glue becoming loose.
