Title: JVS HMX has arrived!
Post by: Fearless Fly on March 27, 2014, 06:34:54 AM
Hi all,

A few months back i informed the forum of my purchase of the JVS HMX Signature from Lekka.
The bat arrived safely and have decided it needed a review. A Few Questions that needed to be answered from last time was the application of what James calls X6000, I have seen no benefit so far with this application but i havent used the bat in a game or net session. Second point of call was the giant blue signature down the face. I can assure everyone that this came out with a light sand and you can't even tell it was there.

But enough of that lets get along to the bat.
Bat is massive and light. 2lb 8 oz, 44mm edges.
The bat does have some con caving on the back which has to led to such a high spine.

I have applied the white HMX decals which i think go really well with the new Xtrax grip.
The performance of the bat is hard to pick without using in a game or net. (my season finished last saturday) I have however had a few throw downs with it in the backyard and the ball pings very nicely.
The bat picks up lighter than the 2lb 8oz dead weight which is really surprising considering the amount of timber.
The bat has an Xtrax handle which can be seen by the "3" ripples on the top of the handle. Not 2 which I'm led to believe is what MIDS do for there bats.

The bat is really good, for the price i have paid for it, it is most definitely worth it. You dont need to pay $700+ or 350 pounds+ for a bat.
The bat goes really well with Xtrax palm gloves which James also supplied me with after purchasing the Xtrax Grips.

Looking forward to everyone's opinion as i am sure there will be many

Looks to be made by the same maker mine was, judging by the handle.  After a seasons use (mine performed very well), the last time it was used it cracked,  spectacularly,  from the toe all the way up the blade.  Checking the moisture content of the knackered bat, it came out at 5%. That's the price of a very big bat for the weight.

Doesn't stop them going well, they just don't last that long.

Wasn't this the magical non concaved or 5 % concaved model?

It would be interesting to find out how that 5% is calculated...

Forgive my ignorance but what benefit does having the handle shaped like that bring?

Also are the grips the same as GM ripple?

apparently is a counter balance from what i have read.

The grips ar slightly different to the ripple. the bottom black half has an octopus ring as well as the ripple. the ripple is just all ripple as far as i have seen

The top of the handle gives you somewhere to put lead tape if you want to. On its own it makes no difference to the bat at all, having used one like this last season.

I really really don't want to offend with the next question but is this Kashmir? If not can we have a close up of the face :)

No its not Kashmir fine for asking. Face needs to be buffed up as after i sanded the signature off i have not buffed it hence the rough look.
Can assure you its not kashmir

How much do these retail for? Just so I can compare to other bats in the market

What do you think of the Xtrax palm on the gloves??  Nice offer to throw them in for nothing.

THese are my second pair of XTRAX palm gloves so i have experienced them before but they are really good, awesome grip when combined with the Xtrax grip

Do they wear any quicker or better compared to other gloves? I've honestly never seen them before.

I have found they last longer but that was the last pair i had a few years back, these look better, and without being hit on them yet wont know what the protection is like, they look to have good protection in them tho

Personally I think it looks awful. I would be a bit annoyed if I spent £200 on that.

Hope it plays better than it looks.

AS i said earlier i sanded the face to eradicate the signature, i do not own a drum to buff the blade up so it is always going to look rougher, the bat looks better in flesh the camera is deceiving.

I did have a few questions and comments?

Firstly the gloves are excellent! I still have a pair which I did a review on and found them to be superb.

Next, could you not have requested that James NOT sign it in such a big way? Maybe ask if he could have signed it on the back? And is that a take on the Laver, which James Laver signs the very best few clefts?
If so, then is this bat the same tiny production run of 5 or 6 a year? Or is it just the Lekka sense of humour?

The profile looks nice actually. 2'8 with that size profile is amazing! Could you do me a favour and measure the blade width? I wouldn't mind knowing if the bat is a shade more narrow to get the extra edge size (a la Black Cat Joker/Lekka Envy bats) If it is identical width to normal bats, then I'd be a little concerned with the moisture content (as Tim pointed out) because even the big 2'8 Asian bats are a good few mm smaller in the edge department! Also does it have a flat face, as this would help increase the edge size?

I'm sure it will buff up nicely fella - and hope it gets you runs this season  :D

How someone can actually have the nerve to even put that sticker on is beyond me

Also to think this is £200+ compared to some of the forum offerings for less :(

Couldn't agree more. You can get alot better for a lot less on the forum. Each to their own though.

Thanks Pete, the signing thing i think was a take the piss moment in Lekkas humour. I believe it was already done when i came to purchase the bat as James came to me saying he thought this bat would suit me. It cam out rather easily and quickly so wasnt an issue.

The blade width 10.25 cm which is the same as a Kookaburra Pro Players "state Players bat" which i am currently refurbing
The face also is rounded not flat.
might be just a light cleft, with low moisture but can never tell

Hope that answers everything!

Would like to clarify...i do not pay full price i said i "think" that was the price. i did not pay 200 pounds for this bat... simples!

I have seen deals of his offering bats for 134.95 pounds but i dont know what is normal price

Each to their own as with everything I guess. I hope it serves you well.

Funny really as I wouldn't have even taken a second look at that bat if I saw the £200 price tag. There are a hell of a lot of bats you can buy for around the £200 price mark I guess.

besides even if i did 200 pounds isnt bad for a bat, gloves, 9 grips and a bat cover... just saying

Good luck with it and hope it serves you well. I wouldn't be as understanding as you though. if I bought something brand new I wouldn't want to have to sand it down when it arrives, I would expect it in pristine condition. Maybe I don't have a sense of humour but it's just silly having a scribble on your bat face (especially the size of what was shown in the pics before)

Hey, couldn't really see the grains in the pic. May be a close up fo the face would help. All that matters is if youo like the bat or not.Hope this serves you well.

agreed on the scribble part. I do bat refurbs in my hometown so i had 5 there when it arrived so it wasnt much. i usually sand up my new bats regardless of how they come to oil or apply anti scuff sheets. Was more a gimmick i believe but the bat speaks for itself

Unfortunately that is camera quality the the sanding part i mentioned earlier. I bat in store would be buffed and i do not own a drum to buff it

I never said that you yourself paid £200.

You said they normally retail for about £200 which is what other people would expect to pay i.e. myself. I myself therefore wouldn't take a second look at the bat.
