Firstly, hello, first time poster.
I'm considering buying a Newbery, but living in South Africa doesn't help.
There are a few second hand ones floating around but as it would be my first I want it brand new.
Unfortunately due to the exchange rate I'm quite limited as to what I can get.
Just wondering if any of you bat savant's could help me.
I'm looking at either a GT or an Uzi (both 5*). I like a light bat, playing mainly T20, but hopefully also some 40 over games as well. Just wondering if it's better to buy from Newbery directly, I know they deliver to South Africa, just not sure of the price. Or an online store like prodirect who have an Uzi for 119 pounds and delivery is another 12 pounds. Wondering if that's a good price?

Newbery make very good bats - but so do Bellingham and Smith. Just sayin'.

First of. Pat yourself on the back, you've made a great decision.
I have a GT players, it's an absolute rocket!!! the middle goes down quite close to the toe.
I'm currently knocking in a Uzi 5* that has me excited as it's amazing ping and it's not opened up yet!
You can't go wrong. If for some reason you didn't like the bat you got, it would easily sell on.

Why don't you get a bat made by Newbery but at half the price .... Plenty of smaller brands are basically newbery's

The 5 stars are very often great value for money.
I know Paul at It's Just Cricket normally has a good selection. Drop him a line.

Bought a B&S a couple years back. Half way through a net session the handle broke clean off.
Decided to never go back. Probably a bad decision, but it has stuck in my mind since then.

119 for a 5star is not bad mate, and shipping is cheap too. From experience 5* are still very good, just not the best looking, I would say go for it but keep in mind prodirect might be out of stock as their website is not really linked to the warehouse...

the batmakers at Newbery are fabulous and has been mentioned do make for other brands, as far as I am aware.

Sad to hear of your broken handle its a pity you did not take it back as I know Mr Bellingham would rather keep a customer than lose one and thanks Buzz a handle can go at any time in any bat its just unfortunate it happened to you I am sure you will find a top bat on here

It's true any handle from any brand can break. Guess I just never thought it would happen to me haha. I did get the bat through a sports franchise warehouse, with not the best reputation.
Obviously if I bought a Newbery and the handle went it would a disaster, with the shipping costs involved.
Custom made bats from the companies on the forum could be a cheaper alternative, just not sure of shipping and quality etc, but I will sniff around their threads and have a look.

Another vote for Paul from IJC. I'm in Australia and purchased a size 5 Newbery Kudos Players for my son from Paul. The bat was sent on a Friday and arrived the following Monday.
It hasn't been fully knocked in but is responding superbly already. This Newbery is to replace my boy's L&W Special Reserve and is at least as good if not better.

You should also look into D&P Cricket. Great team of guys in Cape Town and producing some good gear.

When I lived in Cape Town most of my bats were done by David and Paul. Very good gear they have.

The south african pro in our midweek hit the b8ggest six ive ever seen with a d&p.
It cleared our rope at about 70m, a 5 lane carpark. And then half of the ground across the roads outfield to land on There pavillion!! It was ridicolous.
Wish they was as easy to get in the uk.

The guys at D&P are really helpful and I got a bat sent all the way to Switzerland when I was living there last year. I can pass on the details if you wish and I'm sure you can get sorted if you need something. Just noticed the UK distrbutor is not a sponsor on the forum anymore as well.
Just like ThatDriver, quite a few of the players in Cape Town use their gear.

Understand what your saying in a similar boat, I'm going to get a GT from IJC when the times right. Start some communication, I 'be found Paul fantastic. Also presume in SA you can remove 20 % VAT.

Just got some d&p pads and gloves from eBay, love them already, good quality and a bit different. Gutted to have missed out on the bat, even more now you say that!
