Title: delamination - how to fix it?
Post by: brokenbat on March 28, 2014, 06:23:28 PM
i was under the impression that delaminated bats cannot be repaired.. but a few people have posted about how they got a delam bat "refurbed". so, just curious - how does one correct delamination?

It is basically open heart surgery for a bat, complicated and no guarantee it will work or last.

Locate the delamination, cut a slit into the willow and peel/lift back the strips of willow that have lifted off the rest of the bat, get glue in behind them, clamp the strips back in place and cross fingers.

Is how i do it anyway.

It depends where it is - if you cannot visibly see where the lift of the delamination is then I doubt you can fix it unless you cut the bat to find the section that is delaminated.

However, the majority of the time the delamination is on the face of the bat which is glued and clamped until dry - lots of tape/bat face. Think of it as a crack - my premonition is that it should be fixed the same way, so the bat will never be the same as such, but it'll be the best possible solution.

For example, GN posted some pics a while back.

It would look cleaner if you can cut along the grains if there is no opening to glue through.

I have seen it posted by the ex willow baron / conman that gluing delamination reduces performance. I am sure that's debatable having seen the repair job on Clarke's Spartan one.

However you could also say that it could improve performance?

Think of a laminated bat...

Just a quick question can a skuff sheet make the bat sound like it is  delamination as I had a bat that really sounded like it did took the sheet off and cleaned the face up and sound has gone has anyone else had this

I don't use scuff sheets, 99.99% convinced they deaden a bat

I bought chads pb with delamination I could really hear it when I hit it with the mallet but took sheet off cleaned sound gone so can the sheet make you think the bat is delamination on it

not heard of this before, I tried the 'performance' scuff sheets which were thick and did have an odd sound. The only way I guess that would be possible if the scuff sheet was not attached directly to the bat and therefore was hollow in between as that's what delamination is a hollow gap between two parts of the bat.

That makes sense as it had a really thick suff sheet took ages to get the bat nice and clean again I wonder if this was the case with the bat
