Title: Spent A Little Time In The Company Of A Legend Today
Post by: Vitas Cricket on April 09, 2014, 09:10:05 PM
Tony Cook from Hunts County, one of only a handful still around from the old school era. He's made bats for so many top players over the years, and if there is something about bat making he doesn't know, it's not worth knowing.

I visit Hunts about once a week on average and normally get a few seconds with Tony if I need him, but he's often busy making bats, obviously!

Today we had a little time together just to hang out really, even just in normal conservation the things that you can learn from this man are eye opening, I genuinely learn something new about cricket bats/bat making every time I see him.

I'll be back tomorrow to get some custom grade 1 bats lined up for a customer. £165 (from us) to have a bat made by one of the very best, top value.

Have you ever picked up Freddie's old WW? What a bat that is!

When I was in the other week HD Ackermans grandson was in and Tony managed to find the signature branding in a drawer - lad was chuffed to bits

I love Hunts County. It's why British manufacturing led the industrial revolution.

Great set up and honest as the day is long.

Gets my vote!

He does make a cracking bat, visited him last year and he made me a quality triumph custom that a team mate has at the moment. Excellent value for money as well.

Believe he uses a butterfly himself as he says he uses the stuff it is harder to sell.

Yes the quote when asked about bats for himself was something along the lines of 'I make something that I know will go well but we will struggle to sell. Why waste a good one on me?'

I did say there might be an upturn in the popularity of butterfly a few weeks back, so he's got a few clefts in stock ready to go.

If a custom Grade 1 is £165, I wonder how much a butterfly will be?

Yep, Freddie's bat is impressive! They'll always go the extra mile, Hunts, top people.

The only one we have done so far is for a forum member who may identify himself when his bat arrives, it's slightly different though as it's a long blade and has been drilled like a revolution turbo, which will up the cost.

I can find out the cost of a butterfly without the drilling when I'm there tomorrow.

I don't mean to be rude, but have they thought of updating their website? David Willey and David Sales, for example, might respectively be injury-prone and past their best as sponsored players - but at least they haven't retired!

Not sure, they did used to have a pretty good one, but other than new season updates the site hasn't changed for a few years now.

Had some Brilliant County's when I was younger, family friend of mine that coaches at Leicestershire always used to pick them up for me and my Dad. Forget that they are still around now

Think a lot have written hunts off, clubs got most of its kit from there inc shirts over years, I'm looking at another bat next year and will be looking at bb, aldred, h4l and now hunts at that cost

I am wondering if hunts can do this for 165, there must be huge huge margins for others who sell bats for 200 - 300 and even more. Looking like a prospect for next season.
