Title: you can tell the season is nigh...
Post by: trypewriter on April 11, 2014, 02:37:19 PM
It's that time of year when indoor net sessions are drawing to a close, and from my perspective the bowlers are having the best of it. They are now a couple of yards quicker, have sorted their line and length out and have re-discovered the swing and seam that they thought they had lost. As a consequence my batting has been going in the opposite direction!!!
Fortunately, it's still a lot of fun!  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Disagree, bowlers are being lulled into bowling to short so will be easy prey. Then they'll over correct and bowl to full :)

Should net at our facilities then. Nothjng bounces above knee height.
Pretty much same as the first few games wickets. Which is all good.

It is.scary to think that the season starts a week on sat. And ive only had 2 bowling machine nets in 2014. And still can stand up for more than 20mins withiut needing a rest.

its gonna bea hard season.

Only had one net session where everyone came out of the woodwork including some promising new players... some decent medium fast bowling had me on the defensive but got to admit my theory of needing a higher middle bat this season seemed to play out. That and the fact the session seemed to turn into a 'whackathon' by almost everyone else.. trying to impress I guess but made me feeling rather inadequate. However, as an opener I shouldn't have been so hard on myself but due to the numbers in our one and only net the batting session was nowhere near long enough for me to start playing more on the backfoot which would have dealt with the good to longer length cutters...

Let one fast one through which I've come to terms with as it was from a new 'demon' and very decent all rounder who I hope will join our team rather than one of our local opponents.

Can't wait to pick up some bats next week in England and get my own back when I next get into our net....

Had my first outdoor net session yesterday, batting was a dream!
Wet wicket and no grass on there meant I had all the time in the world to play my shots and the bowlers weren't a quick as they were at indoor nets.

Can guarantee it'll be a green top first week and no batsmen will not have a scooby against the moving ball haha

Depends how good the bowlers are. Good ones still pitch it up in nets to get the nicks and edges. Who cares about being driven straight back down the net when you know that on the pitch outside the ball will be a sliding, spitting demon....!

Having been pinned on the toe by a yorker last night I have to agree with Tim.  :o

I think this is the most sensible think I have seen said about fast bowlers! You are exactly right Tim, A decent fast bowler will bowl how he would outside and still get nicks and edges, but the thick ones practice bouncer after bouncer and don't aid the net session for batsmen or themselves, and come first game of the season when they bowl everything short, and get tonked to all parts!

All about bowling full in indoor nets, people who constantly bowl bouncers are morons. Got to get your line and length right not worry about how fast you can hit the back of the net.

Try telling that to our fast bowlers. No surprise myself (63) and our slow right arm swing bowler (28) accounted for 91 of the 140 league wickets we took last year.

Does it stop them running in at nets and banging it in short? No.
Do they go out in the first game of the season and bowl too short on a slow, tennis ball bounce wicket? Yes!
Do I call them all sorts? Yes, How else will they learn!

Then again, it hasn't changed in the 25 years I have been playing cricket. The joys of club cricket!

Too right! The bloke who nabbed me is not noted as one of the quicks but he certainly appeared quicker than them to me because he was bowling it full The short balls I did have trouble with were due to faulty matting - there was a bit of a ripple in one area and if the ball hit that it just shot along the deck like a greased weasel.  :-[

As I've been made club captain this year I've tried to make our nets a bit more focused on individual training - whereas previously it's just a free for all, just go in bowl and bat how you want. However for a couple of people that I want to progress I've told them to work on specifics and it's been quite successful.

The last couple of nets, I've been getting myself and the other batters to bat how they would in a game, and the bowlers to bowl full (our nets don't get much above shin high, but that doesn't stop them from banging it in halfway!)

Yeah. Fair play to our skipper. He has worked hard over the last two years to improve the young lads.

Socially, I can sit and have a pint quite happily with him. On a pitch, I can't stand him. He is a B*llend (The captial B was meant!). Far too over-friendly with other players/captains, makes inappropriate comments, does inappropriate things and is just cringe-worthy. Plus his man-management of players is abysmal. Also, for some inexplicable reason, his Mrs insists on calling me by my nickname (which for some reason, annoys me greatly) rather than my name.

To cut a very long story short, it is very easy to dislike him.

However, Training-wise, you can't fault him. He knows his stuff inside out and tries really hard to make people better - which can't be easy when 50% of the team think you are a complete B*llend (On, and off, the pitch!).

Ultimately, that's life. We all meet people we might not like, get on with or agree with BUT sometimes you cannot fault them for the work they do and what they give.

Greased weasel  :D that made me chuckle. ..

First outdoor net tomorrow :) only down side is that they are artificial but its better than no net at all.

Had a good winter indoors and then had two outdoor nets this week (Tues + Thurs).

Tuesday was damp so we were in the artificial nets......awful...truly awful

Thursday was why we play cricket. Rolled the net over to the training strip on the square and had a good session followed by some fielding.

Mad keen for the season now. Friendly tomorrow v Streetly, Ombersley next saturday and then the league starts on the 26th. Good luck to one and all!

Reading a few of the posts here, the fast bowlers who come to our nets are as thick as the stereotype suggests!

Generally yes.

We call our opener "short and wide"
