Thought I would start up a topic that I have been thinking about doing for a few days...
Who Likes Heartwood?
I have mixed feelings about it, I think if it is uneven and not defined it can be quite ugly and put me off quite a bit....
On the flip side, a nice piece of heartwood that is straight and really contrasts toward the sapwood can look really stunning, and gives the bat a fantastic amount of character. I think one of the Amplus' that Paul recently picked is a fantastic example of this, It looks simply Beautiful!
So what do you guys think?
I have simply talked about aesthetics, although does anyone have any theories about it affecting performance?
Cheers,
Beau

I thing it adds character.
performance... I have no idea.
personally I think a bat will call to its owner, so it gives you confidence. if it has heartwood great, if not...
beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
-
I dont mind it either way.
-
Regarding the performance of heartwood because it does not have much sap this makes the wood more brittle, heartwood is usually found in the centre of the willow tree where the wood is older therefore naturally harder but correctly pressed and prepared prior to use bats made of heartwood should then be able to absorb stress and play the same as sapwood bats. Also heartwood bats can produce a different contact sound.
-
Apparently it is harder so I like it on my inside edge, not overly fussed either way though.
I have a bat with no heartwood and a bat thats all heartwood in my collection
-
I think it would be good to have it on the outside edge or the toe region of the bat. Would not mind it on a average bat but not in a higher grade bat. if I am paying for a higher grade willow and since grading is all about looks...no blemishes allowed.
-
personally I dont like heartwood........
Mianly due to purchasing a quite expensive slazenger which had an amout of heartwood, it was a disaster.........
So I will now not buy bats with heartwood.

I wish I could like heartwood, MDF bats from sports direct are the way forward :D

Personally I never used to mind heartwood but from my experience in last few years every bat with HW that I have had has developed cracks in the HW area. I sold a bat, when the buyer got it he told me there was a crack on the HW side edge and has been professionally repaired :o . Considering this was a virtually new bat with barely any use I was surprised and unhappy.
Have noticed similar issues with all HW bats that I have, so I prefer not to buy them anymore.
-
i have had two and both split where the HW meets the normal wood but I did get thousands of runs out of them.

From that, I cannot work out if you like them because they got a load of runs or dislike because they split????

I think your find he likes heartwood
-
I'm not bothered either way.
-
I don't mind, both were very very good bats. The bat I have now has some on
-
I've just knocked in a bat with an inside edge of heartwood. It cracked like billyo.
No idea if makes a difference with performance and I'm ambivalent about looks.
If the best bat makers say it works then I'll take their word.
-
It's all about taste, fashion.
Yes it's brittle, as it's taken from the centre of a tree you tend to get tighter / straighter grains. i like it, it gives a bat character.

Can you post a pic mate? Never seen one that is all heartwood.
For the record, I despise heartwood because it is hard, brittle, cracks easily, doesn't absorb oil readily, etc...
Heartwood is like a fugly woman who is also high-maintenance :D

If heartwood is more brittle a everyone says I'm wondering what state it will end up in!
-
You should enjoy it - it is a super bat!!
And that is a lovely garden... :D
funny how times change - I loved these three bats and have now sold them all!!

you could construct a nice single lane net in that garden

Wouldn't that be fun... not sure Mrs Buzz would be too enamoured with that plan. ???
-
Thanks Cam! This is like all heartwood with a sliver of sapwood!

Rumour has it Jayasuriya used to ask for all heartwood bats from Laver. You are in good company :)
-
I had a jayasuriya cast off, I complained to laver about the wood being two different colours! Lolol First time I'd ever seen it
